05-Apr-2014 -- We were heading from Forchheim to Munich with our rental car since we were picking up some furniture in both cities. Although time was somewhat limited, I couldn’t miss this confluence by 270 m (that is the minimal distance to the motorway). So we left the motorway at the Sinzing exit, drove up to a distance of 500 m, and walked through the forest. We crossed the motorway by an underpass and soon reached the confluence point.

Interestingly, my Garmin GPS receiver was not able to get a position fix for the whole time of 15 minutes that we had walked. My mobile phone which has built-in GPS only as an additional sensor had no such trouble and was performing well. I guess that mobile phones do perform better, because they can use the cell tower position as an approximate position that assists the position fix. After waiting another 5 minutes, our Garmin finally gave position. But the accuracy was extremely bad with 30 m! Although I went out of the forest into a nearby open field, the accuracy was never better than 21 m. I never had experienced such a bad position fix under such normal conditions. Either the ionosphere was causing trouble or the GPS system had a problem.

The confluence is located in a spruce forest. Older trees have been cut very recently. There are several forest tracks within 10 m – 20 m distance. An open field is 80 m from the confluence.

We walked back the same way that we had come returning our car one hour after we had left it.
