#1: Cook Nieu village

(visited by John Dag Hutchison)

15-Feb-2014 -- I was in Luang Prabang and saw that the cp was within reach. I arranged for a young man with a strong motorbike to come to my guesthouse at around 6.30 in the morning for transport across the Mekong River and then onwards towards the cp. He did not turn up, and I finally found an alternative, a young man with a small Honda.

We got on the road by 9 a.m. He did not know the area. The roads or tracks were many and as we approached, the condition of the roads worsened. It did not help that we also had to climb 300 to 400 meters. Some of the ascents were so steep that the little motorbike could not make it, and I had to get off and walk up the hill. After about 30 km we came to a village named something like Cook Nieu, 3.98 km from the cp. The village headman said he could take us to the confluence point, but it was lunchtime and too late for that day. We were welcome to stay overnight with him and could start out early next morning.

Well, time did not allow for that. I had a flight back to Chiangmai next day, but I shall consider it for a try in the autumn. Then I would have a 4-wheel drive pickup drop me at the village in the evening and pick me up again next evening. Clinging to the back of a motorcycle on these dusty and bumby roads was extremely uncomfortable and exhausting on arms, legs and spine.
