#1: The Confluence from 15 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

17-Nov-2013 -- This is the second out of 7 reports reaching 5 and attempting 2 confluence points in Botswana. Out of the 5 successful visits two had not been visited before. The story story starts from 24S 25E.

After our failure at noon, we continued westwards on the paved central Kalahari road. At a remaining distance of 1 km, we turned into a gravel road with an open gate and continued the road until its minimal distance of 580 m was reached. We both left the car and hiked to the confluence point within 15 minutes. Walking was not too difficult on this flat, almost treeless terrain with some knee-high bushes and grass. At the end of the dry season, the vegetation is throughout dry.

Right at the location where we parked, there was a white stone marker with the inscription “W 0 100”. This reads almost like coordinates of a confluence point, but it is most likely a distance marker. Interestingly the height of the confluence is exactly 1100 m.

After our return to the car, we continued driving westwards with little hope to make it to the next confluence point before nightfall.
