#1: looking to the CP from 25 m east

17-Jun-2013 -- After the visit of 55N 12E in Denmark and the bracing side trip to Brewhouse Braunstein in Køge we crossed the Øresund by bridge and took the E22 north with direction Kristianstad. We left the highway in Tollarp and followed smaller roads for a short stop at castle Ovesholm. Overlooking a small lake you can spot the castle from the road already, and amongst the huge woods and gardens CP 56N 14E nests as well.

We left the car at the entrance to the garden, a stony gate, bearing the inscription of founders and ancestors. Nobody visible on the estate, so we took the dogs for a walk to cover the remaining 500 m. When crossing a meadow to get to the point in the adjacent wood, the noise of a car revealed the presence of other people. A small cross-country vehicle stopped above the meadow and a beckoning middle-aged man approached. The landlord introduced himself and asked about our destination. We told our intention and showed him the reports of our predecessors. He seemed a little astonished to hear from the project and of former visitors, without having any notice of it. But his interest aroused, and briefly we gained insight into the history of the property.

For 5 generations the estate belongs to his family and just today he handed it to the 6th generation, to his daughter. Even when switching the conversation from English to German (unfortunately we are not able to speak Swedish), he could follow without any problems. His grandmother came from Germany and so he was familiar with this language. He smiled when detecting the value of 12,000 hectare of castle grounds in one of the reports and told us, not to reveal the actual size of his property. So we keep the … hectare of land as our shared secret.

After a few stories of visits to his relations in Germany he took leave, because he had to attend to his duties for this afternoon – not as a landlord anymore but as the keeper of the castle garden. As a big problem he describes the repressing of the giant hogweed. Since 1920 it spread out in the park and pushes aside the native plants and animals. And while Astrid compared some last notes with the (new) full-time gardener, I covered the few meters to the edge of the wood, where the CP is nesting. Because of the already fully-fledged treetops, an exact navigation turned out quite difficult. So I approached as close as 25 m and took the photos of this beautiful spot, the CP choose as his home.

About 6 p.m. we lingered along the cleared giant hogweed back to the car and continued our Sweden expedition. Wishing good luck to the 6th generation of Ovesholm – and success to the 5th generation in recapturing the land from the claws of the giant hogweed!
