#1: Overview

(visited by Karl Bryk and Michael Bryk)

30-Aug-2013 -- This is visit 5 in a series of 7 CP visits while on a short road trip with my son Michael from 28 to 30 August 2013.

The previous visit was N46 E14

After completing Slovenia we made a dash for the Italian border. This was helped by the new motorways in Slovenia, built since my Slovenian map was printed many years ago ;-) Since we had already visited 2 CPs and traversed Slovenia it was already early evening when we crossed into Italy. According to the navi we would make N46 E13 by 8 p.m., early enough to take some daylight photos.

But then disaster struck. Just as we wanted to get on the motorway to take us North towards Udine and then West towards the CP we found the motorway blocked by the police. So we got on South instead (there was nowhere else to go) and headed the wrong way. We could see cars driving North so maybe the motorway was not blocked after all but we came off at the next exit (paying a massive road toll of 50 cents) and decided to take the non-motorway route instead.

This was the right decision as a few minutes later we were driving parallel to the motorway, for many kilometres with no cars moving and people out of their cars having a impromptu party. But we were affected - people who would have been on the motorway were now on the national roads and we were stuck in a traffic jam and moving slowly. Long story short - we lost about an hour covering 3-4 km after which it got better but we arrived at the CP in the dark. We took the photos we could but decided to look for a hotel and return in the morning.

We were tired and I did not want to risk the visit being classified as unsuccessful because of the dark photos we had already taken. We were lucky to find the Hotel Belvedere - reminding us of Vienna - and the next morning, rested, we returned to the CP and took the photos you see. Then it was back heading north towards Vienna and home but on the way we would visit 2 more easy CPs, the first of which was N47 E15
