#1: The Confluence from 30 m

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

18-Feb-2012 -- This is the fourth out of six confluences that I visited during a short trip to Australia. The story begins at 33°S 151°E. The previous visit is 34°S 150°E.

The night before I had camped in deep forests north of the Reservoir Wyangala. Getting out of the forest turned out to be difficult – driving through a labyrinth of small and slow going tracks took a good fraction of the morning until I finally reached the shoreline of Lake Wyangala. There, some campers had no good news for me: this was a dead end and I had to go all the way around the forest again and then cross the river at the Wyangala Dam. Taking unpredicted delays with ease is a key to confluencing, which however is only possible if you have included sufficient extra time in your schedule. I had no strict timing and therefore could enjoy this extra loop (swimming in the lake was by-the-way a great experience!).

So it was already 10:30 AM when I finally approached the confluence point. A public road crosses private land on a well maintained track up to a distance of 2.2 km. During an enjoyable hike I traversed some forests and meadows until I reached the meadow of the confluence. Although the confluence is located directly above Lake Wyangala, the lake itself cannot be seen from the point, because a little hill prevents a direct view. While taking pictures of the cardinal directions of the confluence I saw a kangaroo jumping along. For me, coming to Australia for the first time, this was a very special and exciting event. But anyhow, the green meadow with blue and yellow flowers, the lake and some scattered trees make up a beautiful landscape. The only sign of human activity was the surring sound of some motor boats on the lake.

The hike back to the car was hot as the noon sun had heated up the standing air. It was exactly noon when I reached my car and drove off further south towards the little sleepy town of Boorowa.
