08-Jan-2012 - The confluence: at a height of 620 m on the western slope of a small hillock some 10 km from the small village of Totoral. The area is semi–arid scrub and on the edge of the Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world. Nearby is the Chilean national reserve of “Llanos de Challe”, an area famous for and set up to protect the local rare coastal cacti and vegetation, particularly the “Garra de León”, a plant with an impressive red flower when in bloom. The area is also a great place to see the flowering desert on those rare occasions, every 5 years or so, when it does get rain. Although right in the middle of broken rocky hills, access to the confluence is relatively easy with an obvious dirt road leading out just to the west of Totoral. The road brings you to 3 km of the confluence, from there on just hunt for minor tracks. I managed to drive to within 500 m of the confluence and hike the last bit.

I had no intention of doing this confluence. I had headed north from home to chase the Dakar rally. I assumed with all the mining activity in the region or the fact that the Dakar rally had passed through here for the last 4 years that a miner or one of numerous Dakar fans, well equipped with 4x4s and GPS and used to off-roading, would have got here first. In fact there were some mining trig points marking out the area nearby. After the rally, I did a quick check of the confluence, saw it was not done and headed off.

En route up to the rally a couple of days earlier, I had passed by the nearest dirt road to the south and access from that side looked like a long hike over very broken and rocky hills. On the map the route from Totoral looked less likely but an unmarked road on the map that appeared on my GPS made life a whole heap easier. Driving to within 500 m, albeit with a climb of 150 m or so made this surprisingly achievable. Having taken the required photos, it was then back to Totoral to take some tourist snaps and then the long haul home. A 9-hour drive back down the pan-American highway.
