  39°N 121°W (visit #9)

#1: Looking south towards the closest large tree

(visited by Terje Mathisen)

09-Sep-2011 -- After the visit to 39°N 122°W I went on to this point: Except for the final hurdle through the manzanita brambles, it is a very easy confluence, located half a mile from the Applegate exit on I80.

I first tried to access the point from the west, since that side has much moreopen forest, but I had to turn around when a several dogs started barking at me, and one unleashed german shepard ran directly towards me. I therefore drove back to the first good parking spot on the east side and spent some time finding a way through the extremely dense forest.

The point itself isn't quite as overgrown as the images from previous visitors could indicate, and it is located less than 10 m from the open area surrounding the dirt road that leads to the back entrance of the house on top of the hill.

On my way up, after the bramble crawl, I saw an opening into the forest, so on my way back to the car I tried out this and it turned out to be a very nice "jungle path" leading almost directly back to my car.

On the track log image, this path is shown in yellow.

After these two visits it was time to drive on to the Truckee area, near Lake Tahoe, where the Western States Championship in orienteering takes place this weekend, with a sprint race today, middle distance on Saturday and finally the long distance race on Sunday.
