#1: Looking North along La Strada Street

(visited by Alan Fox, Carolyn Fox and Symon)

16-Dec-2010 -- While on a road trip from Regina, Saskatchewan Canada to Florida to spend Christmas and New Years with our daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughters, we visited a few confluences. This confluence is in a suburb of greater Memphis, Tennessee. We stayed in a nearby motel overnight and decided to try for this visit in the morning as it had been too dark the evening of our arrival. By 7:45 AM when we arrived at the confluence street, we had post dawn light. It was overcast, raining lightly and 46°F. Low flying planes were approaching and departing from the nearby Memphis airport. A long swarm containing hundreds of birds dipped and dived overhead, twisting and turning in one long group like a black cloud. They had also been doing the same over our motel as we had been packing up to leave.

From our motel we took Main Street, which is also the State Line between Mississippi and Tennessee, then went north on Airways Blvd (it passes the airport), then turned west on Kilarney Ave and north on La Strada St. The confluence is on a well manicured lawn in a nicely kept neighborhood. Because of the time of year, many of the homes were decorated for Christmas. A couple of curious neighbors came out to see what Alan was doing while walking back and forth in front of this house. The two gentlemen asked questions and listened as Alan explained, showed them his GPS, and told them about the DCP website. One was already looking it up on his phone as he returned to his home. Although Alan prefers to get all zeros, in deference to the homeowners, he did not walk on their lawn to find them. He was close but not right on.

Our area photographs, taken the evening before, show Graceland, Elvis Presley's home on Elvis Presley Boulevard (four miles NW of the confluence) and Marlowe's Ribs & Restaurant, a mile south of Graceland on the same Boulevard. We went there for their Memphis Style Barbecued ribs after seeing them featured on television's Food Network. As well as good food and Elvis memorabilia, including some of his Gold Records, Marlowe's features a multitude of trophies won in cooking competitions and a gift shop with Elvis and Marlowe's souvenirs. We visited for awhile with the owner in the gift shop. He told us that after he established Marlowe's in 1974, Elvis used to come to eat there. See here.

It was an easy visit and we were soon driving through Mississippi on our way towards Florida.

Coordinator's Note: Remark: Main Street (or Stateline Rd) is not exactly running along the State Line between Mississippi and Tennessee, but is passing about 0.2 mi south of it.
