4th confluence out of a trip of 5+

Continued from 55°N 26°E

Travelling in Lithuania by car is fairly pleasant – the roads are well maintained, there are several motorways and the traffic is rather light. I was really surprised that in Vilnius I didn’t encounter any traffic jams – not even on Friday afternoon. The only one I came across during my journey was on Saturday morning when I was leaving for Kaunas. For some 10 minutes we were slowly moving in a column of cars on the A1. It turned out that most of the people were going to a huge bazaar located just outside the city limits.

The remaining distance to Kaunas passed uneventfully. I crossed the Neris (Wilia) River over a motorway bridge and had to take a detour, because the traffic scheme had changed as compared to what my sat-nav knew.

For some 10 km I drove along the river, then I turned north and went steeply uphill to the village of Lapės (Łopie). Several kilometres after the village I turned left into a dirt road and parked the car near a single farmhouse. The weather was very nice, it was sunny and not very cold. The confluence point was some 550 m away.

I started walking towards the south-west, then I turned to the north and came to a steep embankment surrounding the lake. It was not easy to climb it because the ground was wet and muddy. Moving slowly and carefully I approached the shore at the distance of 24 m to the confluence. I didn’t have enough courage to follow Mr. Rainer Mautz and swim to the “zero” point (particularly in October it was not a tempting idea) so I remained on the ground.

When I was taking pictures of the surroundings I spotted two men coming along with a fishing equipment. After a short conversation in English it turned out that both gentlemen spoke perfect Polish. They were natural born Lithuanians but they learnt Polish while watching Polish TV in order to get some uncensored news in Soviet times. I told them about our project and that raised their interest, so perhaps they will be the next visitors who would reach the confluence with some floating device.

Upon returning to the car I had my elevenses and then I drove to Kaunas. During the inter-war period the city functioned as a temporary capital of Lithuania, but it has still remained a nice and pleasant place. It is very attractively located at the confluence of the two largest Lithuanian rivers, the Nemunas (Niemen) and the Neris (Wilia). The confluence was, of course, the first thing I went to see…

Dalsza podróż do Kowna przebiegła bezproblemowo.

Wróciwszy do samochodu przekąsiłem drugie śniadanie i pojechałem do Kowna.
