2nd confluence out of a trip of 5+

Continued from 54°N 24°E

After visiting the confluence point in Druskininkai the following day I drove to the Grūtas Park – a unique open-air collection of Soviet-era statues from all over Lithuania. The exhibition of stone Lenins, Stalins, Marxes and many other Lithuanian communists is a sad memento of the time when Lithuania lost its independence and became a part of the USSR for more than 45 years. Then I climbed the highest point of Lithuania – Aukštojas Hill that reaches an imposing elevation of 293.84 meters above sea level.

In the afternoon I arrived in Vilnius. The capital city of Lithuania and particularly the Old Town is truly beautiful and for a Pole there are so many fascinating places of common history, so many objects and events depicted in Polish literature, so many Polish intellectuals that graduated from the Vilnius University, so many famous people buried in the Vilnius Cathedral and at the Rasos (Rossa) Cemetery… The close relationship between Poles and Lithuanians was probably best expressed by Adam Mickiewicz, commonly regarded as the greatest Polish poet, who started his national epic “Pan Tadeusz” with the words “Oh Lithuania, my fatherland!”. Aside from those solemn matters it is also worth mentioning the Lithuanian cuisine – simple but delicious!

Next day I departed at 9 am and drove north-west along the A2 motorway. After 40 km I took the Bartkuškis exit, then I followed local roads for 10 km and before 10 o’clock I arrived in the village of Kieliai. I parked the car on the verge of the road, at the border between Kieliai and Avižonys. The confluence point lay some 150 m away in a field.

I wore trekking shoes and walked north across a wet meadow and stubble field. After three minutes my GPS showed that I found the destination. The surroundings were very calm, nearest buildings were some hundred meters away and the only witnesses of my presence there were some cows. I took the pictures and quickly returned to the car because – although sunny – the day was very cold – it was only two degrees centigrade above zero.

8 października 2010 -- Po odwiedzeniu przecięcia w Druskienikach następnego dnia pojechałem do Parku Grūtas – unikatowego zbioru posągów z czasów radzieckich, zebranych z terenu całej Litwy.
