11-Aug-2010 – Looking at the map “Worldwide Confluence Navigator” on the site of the project we noticed that in Southern Federal District in Russia there are still lots of confluence point we haven’t visited yet. We decided to travel by car to Kalmykia, Stavropol' Territory and Rostov region. Confluences in Kalmykia seemed to be the most difficult ones, and it was really so! We “closed” only 2 points out of 5. Southern and eastern parts of the Republic are situated in a semi-desert zone, there are lots of sands there, and few cars can possibly drive there.

The first confluence point to visit was 47°N 46°E. The CP is situated on the territory of Republic of Kalmykia, 12.4 km to the south from village Beloozernyy. The nearest asphalt road is 23 km to the east from there. We moved from Saratov to Volgograd, turned to the road towards Elista, and reached the regional center Malye Derbety. After it the asphalt ended and the adventures began. The dusty country roads interchanged with worn-down graders, the last 11 km we were moving on the sand tracks and steppe. The maximum temperature was 42°С. We spent a night 25 km from the confluence in the steppe listening to the howl of wolves. In the whole we moved 184 km from the asphalt to the confluence point.

The land is flat; it is mainly desert steppe or semi-desert. There are wells after each 10-20 km, near them there are sheepyards. Herds of cattle and flocks of sheep are at grass.

We moved east from the confluence point and after 28 km of steppe roads reached a good asphalt one: Tsagan-Aman – Utta road. After getting into sands near Zenzeli village, we left confluence points of South-Eastern Kalmykia and moved to the point 46°N 43°E in Stavropol' Territory.
