30-Dic-2009 --

30-Dec-2009 --

(transl. By Edita Rimaviciute)

This point of confluence was approached in December 2005 by two friends Leopoldo Sananes and Raul Molina. Since then, many people have kept an eye on it, but for the complicated vegetation and irregular topography held it disconcerting to be "hunted", even more after the information revealed by a helicopter expedition led by Andrés Amadio, see video, Vicente Santorsola, Luis Molina "El Guarito" and Aldo Pattini to whom I express my thanks, because we tried to land near the "point", but for the said topographical difficulties and fuel shortages we could only mark the 10N-66W from the air, so it was not available for "rating".

For a couple of months we, Vincenzo Vecchio & Andrea Polo, both with a respectable curriculum of “confluence hunters“, thus engaged in the same “hobby", have kept in touch by the "information highway" trying to find a way to realize our "hunting" adventure, and took advantage of the trip taken by Andrea from San Cristobal to Caracas to expedite the documents at the Russian Embassy for his wife, and decided almost unexpectedly to visit this point of confluence.

We informed our friends Santorsola Vicente, Andrés Amadio and "Guarito", who were all waiting to accompany us, but none of them had the opportunity to accompany us that day: Vicente had certain commitments, Andrés for being recovered after an operation, and "Guarito" for travelling reasons.

The evening before the trip we discussed some details of our "hunting" strategy. We left at 7 am on 30 December 2009 in our RAM-2500, 4x4 from Caracas, accompanied by Don Luis Echeverria, father-in-law of Vincenzo, and took the route of Caucagua. After crossing the picturesque land of Guatopo National Park, with its characteristic vegetation of tropical moist forests and many family recreation resorts, we arrived in a small town of "Altagracia de Orituco”. We continued our trip along the national road # 11 until, after 55 km, the farm "El Martillo" appeared in front of us, where at the crossroads we turned to the left and went down a good dirty road after Rio Negro village at 22 km from Batatal village.

We had travelled 4 hours and made a trip of 230 km before we reached Las Flores, where our predecessors Raul and Leonardo had arrived before us.

The Aviles family helped us by allowing their son Luis Fernando, only 15 years, though expert in that area, to join us in our expedition.

The GPS told us that our 10N-66W was 2.1 km away from us to the West-Northwest direction; it was 12.20 pm and we began to walk towards the "unknown", prepared for any surprises.

The first kilometre was a steep climb of nearly 120 m above the sea level up to the top of the mountain chain; there, we took advantage of the first stop to have a sandwich snack, our small lunch and admired a spectacular view below us over the valley.

Then, we continued our march. The path led us precisely to the required direction and we managed to avoid the hard work of opening the way through the forest with the "machete" and later descended on the other side of the mountain, steep as previous for almost a kilometre and more than 200 mt above the sea level, until we came to the dry bed of the stream "Rio Chiquito.

We were lucky, because the course of the stream maintained exactly the direction that led us to the 10N-66W.

We walked over the slippery stones and small springs of crystal clear water for about 1.5 km on an outlandish and winding road that brought us closer to our destination.

GPS showed a distance of only 320 mt to the destination, but we had to leave the bed of Rio Chiquito, since we were moving too far to the North. However, our young guide led us to a narrow path of the stream, a small tributary of Rio Chiquito, which, thanks to our "lucky stars that protected us," resumed the perfect direction towards our confluence. The bed of the stream became an increasingly deep and narrow gorge, which was very dangerous for large and slippery stones ... I could not even imagine the consequences of an accidental fall!!

The walk required much precaution and became very slow. We were only 81 mt from the goal and, taking into account the tolerance of the GPS: 19 mt of error according to the rules, the confluence was already ours! But the pride compelled us to arrive at our destination with precise coordinates. We abandoned the dangerous stream and began to climb the steep slope of the mountain: Vincenzo and Luis on one side and Andrea on the other, constantly shouting the distance to correct the direction of the "final dance of the point", which was extremely difficult for the large inclination of the land surface and tangled leafy vegetation with thorny bushes.

It was exactly 16.18 pm and on that difficult and steep slope we reached the point of 10N-66W exhausted from the great effort and bleeding from numerous wounds caused by thorny branches, but satisfied for the goal achieved.

We admired the willpower of Don Luis who, despite his 65 years, accompanied us at a brisk pace and with energy of a young athlete.

The satisfaction of trying to achieve that difficult 10N-66W could not be compared with other confluences, which were simple and free of adrenaline!

After taking the routine pictures and a short well-deserved break with a snack high in calories, see video, we hurried up to take the way back; Vincenzo left in the "point" his faithful hat in witness of this adventure so that our friend Ivan Galicki would return the favour and go to get it, as it happened with 11°N 64°W visit #7.

The return seemed more difficult and longer for the accumulated fatigue. We reached the source of Rio Chiquito wrapped in the darkness of the night, and the last, steep climb completely worn out our energies; basically, we were moving with hands and feet, holding on to anything that helped us climb in total darkness, stumbling, slipping, bumping into obstacles, grasping with our bare hands thorny bushes and feeling the bites of ants and stings of aggressive insects.

So, after a total of 8 hours and 9.2 km of arduous walk we reached exhausted in a "non-sanitary condition" our faithful RAM-2500 that took us back home and culminated this adventure around 2 am on 31 December. We were already thinking of a new hunt for the next confluence.

I, Andrea Polo, dedicate this adventure to my Russian parents-in-law Ludmila & Nikolay Ageev who always stimulate my insatiable thirst for adventures.

And I, Vincenzo Vecchio, dedicate this adventure to my family that, even if not physically present, accompanied me step by step in my path.
