21-Nov-2009 -- 2nd confluence out of a trip of 2

Continued from 49°N 20°E

The following day I went to East Slovakia to visit my penultimate confluence point in this country. Unfortunately, the weather broke, and although I left Poprad in sunshine early morning, soon I drove in dense fog and rain.

Along almost all the way from Poprad to Prešov extensive construction works on the D1 motorway were carried out. I took advantage of two short sections of the motorway that had already been put into operation, including an impressive, nearly 5 kilometers long Branisko tunnel. Beyond Prešov I headed for Humenné and driving slowly through numerous villages (Slovak highway police is very vigilant) I reached the village of Vyšný Hrušov. There I turned to the north and after about 1.5 km I parked the car on the verge of the road.

The confluence point lay ca. 130 m away, behind a strip of dense brush. Having approached it I discovered a little stream of very soft, clayish banks. In anticipation of such conditions I had worn Wellington boots, but every step made me sink deeper and deeper in the mud and the threat of losing the boots there was quite real. After several minutes, using trees’ branches, stones and Nordic walking poles I managed to safely get across to the other bank but my boots looked like this.

The search among bushes for the zero point lasted quite a while, but finally I managed to get all zeros on the display. The place was very calm and quiet, there were not any people or buildings around, only rolling hills covered with meadows and forests. The fog lifted and it warmed up to 8 °C but the sky was overcast.

On the way back I crossed the stream at some other, slightly less muddy spot, but when I returned to the car it took me half an hour to roughly clean my shoes and clothes of a thick layer of clay. After a short rest I drove to Košice - the capital of eastern Slovakia, and in the evening I went back to Poprad.

Pogoda niestety znacznie pogorszyła się, i choć gdy wyjeżdżałem wczesnym rankiem z Popradu świeciło jeszcze słońce, to wkrótce wjechałem w gęstą mgłę i deszcz.
