#1: The Confluence Point

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

13-Nov-2009 --

General information about the tour

This is the first out of 7 confluences that I reached during an extended weekend-trip to Spain. Having only 3 days available the time constraints didn’t allow bringing my bicycle. The logistics (and costs) of transporting a bike in the plane would not be worth the trouble. Nevertheless, I enjoyed Spain’s beautiful autumn from a rental car and during some nice hikes. Besides confluence hunting, one aim of the tour was to improve and practice my Spanish language skills.

Information about this confluence

Directly after work on Thursday evening I hopped in a plane from Zurich to Madrid. From the airport I continued my trip by a rental car in South-Eastern direction. I stayed the night in a simple “hostel” in Tarancón – a town that is located 90 km from Madrid and only 1 km beeline from the confluence point.

With the first daylight next morning, I simply started hiking from my hostel near the station towards the confluence point. The confluence point is right at the southern edge of Tarancón and can be reached by crossing a railroad line and the National Road N-400. The CP is on a field about 70 m south of the southernmost industrial street with the uninspired name Camino Veintiuno. At this time of the year it was already harvested. An agricultural track goes right though the point. However, maybe the confluence will undergo some changes in the near future. About 100 m south, constructions are going on. Within an infrastructure project, a huge concrete pipeline is being built. The probability that the confluence gets “eaten” by the growing town of Tarancón is significantly above zero.
