  51°N 4°E (visit #10)

#1: The confluence of 51° North and 4° East at 160 m

(visited by Henk Pouwels)

07-Sep-2009 -- This CP can be approached by car as close as 160m. The motorway E17 between Antwerp and Gent is at about 8 km to the North and the motorway between Brussels and Gent is at the same distance to the South. Look for the N416 from Dendermonde to Wetteren, which runs parallel to the river Schelde. 1 km westbound of Schoonaarde a small road to the left between the houses leads to a railway crossing. Park your car at the other side of the railway and the CP is another 160 m to the south in the fields. At this time the crop is full-grown corn. The neighbouring field is a meadow without animals.

Walking to the corner in the centre of photograph #1 brought me to 14 m of the CP. I did not enter the corn. The North and East photographs show the edge of the cornfield and the South and West photographs show the more than man high corn. This corn was only about a foot high during the visit by Ole Henseler 2-½ month ago. The concrete pole at the left in the eastern view is the pole from where I made my NESW photographs.

The GPS reading was taken with the GPS on the ball of orange coloured rope in front of the pole. The track is in light blue in an aerial photograph by Google. The small extrusion in the field is an attempt to find a Geodetic Point (Nr 22h07c1) indicated in a Belgian topographic map with calculated position 51°00.063’ N 03°59.886’ E; nothing was found.

The last picture shows my car parked close to the railway crossing and a train passing by. At the bottom some plants which usually are found in the verge of such roads and railways.
