#1: Track to the Confluence

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

31-Aug-2009 -- This is the fifth confluence visit out of a set of six. The story starts from 10°N 65°W.

Having achieved Guyana’s first successful confluence visit at 4°N 59°W we took a bus to Linden, arriving there in the middle of the night at 2 am.

Linden is a mining town, hardly visited by tourists. The purpose of our arrival here was clearly dedicated to the confluence point visit. The beeline distance from Linden to the confluence is 33 km – much more than I had expected. In order to tackle this point, I could (or should!) have taken a taxi with all-wheel-drive. Instead I hired a bicycle. If you ask me why, I would tell you that an individual bike trip is more pleasurable in my perspective than emotional negotiations with cash-hungry taxi drivers.

I was able to organize a bicycle from a friend of a friend of a staff member of our hotel. At 8:30 am, I was organized and ready to go – let me mention that the quick set-up time was my biggest achievement that day.

First, I headed southwards on the main road until I reached an intersection towards the East at 29 km beeline distance. Caution: the track is hardly visible from the road. The area here is dominated by open pit mining.

Unfortunately, the track (that is actually visible from Google Earth) turned out to be very sandy and not at all suitable for biking. I had to push most of the time at speeds around 4-5 km/h. Soon the heat of the day with temperatures around 40°C exhausted my water-supply of initially 3 litres. At 12 o’clock, my point of return had come at 5° 56’ 7.4’’ North and 58° 9’ 56.7’’ West at a distance of 19.7 km to the confluence.

At 3:30 pm I was back to our hotel “hyacinth’s”. I was not entirely happy with the results of that day, but surely I had become more acquainted with my own bounds.
