#1: View of confluence looking north

(visited by Tim Breeze, Suzanne Breeze, Sarah Breeze and Rachel Breeze)

24-Jul-2009 --

While planning our trip back to Queensland I notice that 18S 136E was not far from Calvert Rd. We had made a successful visit to 18°S 134°E visit #1 near the Barkly Stock Route in the morning and as that road was in excellent condition we decided to divert down Calvert Road to do this second confluence.

This road too was in good condition and from the map we were soon at the No. 5 bore, with its "turkey nest" dam and cattle yards. The countryside was dead flat grassland with only occasional scrubby trees.

From the road near the bore it was about 2 km to the confluence. We carefully drove part of the way in. The ground was very rough from cow hooves sinking into the soft clay dirt during the wet season, but now it was dry and hardened, and we walked the last km. There were a few cows around as well as some kangaroos and locusts flying as we walked through the grass.

We took the photos at the confluence and returned to the car. As it was nearly sundown we decided to sleep out under the stars near the roadside that night.

This confluence is also associated with 17°S 132°E visit #1 which we visited the day before.
