25-Jul-2009 --

25-Jul-2008 --

Once we successfully complete the visit to 10°N 62°W confluence hunting, we are heading towards the North by the calm waters of the Gulf of Paria, however we knew that we had to cross Dragon’s Mouths in the time when the water streams are extremely strong and would be faced strong waves against the bow of the patrol boat.

When we were near the peninsula of Paria we see the population of Macuro, site reached Christopher Columbus in his third trip to New World, been the only place where Columbus step on continental lands. Columbus and his men remained in the area for several days, interacting with the Kariña ethnic indigenous living in the area. At that time he thought had come to an island, so called it Grace Island (Isla de Gracia). The etymology name is based on the legend whereby indigenous people to see vessels of Columbus, they shouted ”Macuro” which means white man.

We reached Dragon’s Mouths and as we expected waves were very strong and hitting front to the patrol boat, as can be seen in this short video taken just at the entrance to Dragon’s Mouths. In the picture 4 can appreciate Patos Island at the south entrance of Dragon’s Mouths and navigation conditions, also in the picture 5 the strong waves can be seen coming from North to South in the foreground and background Chacachacare, Monkeys, and Trinidad Islands at the end.

Once we passed Dragon’s Mouths and enter waters of the Caribbean Sea immediately the coloration of sea water was changed to a beautiful intense blue and the waves more calm in relation to Dragon's Mouths. From here the patrol boat approached in a straight line the confluence, passing on it to 11: 57 am. We proceeded to take required pictures and we went to the beautiful Bay of Uquire right at the south of this CP, to celebrate success in this double confluence hunting.

In Bay of Uquire there is a non stationary population of fishermen, that use the bay as refuge or site to spend the nights within of their fishing sea incursions. Access to here is only by sea and is surrounded by mountains of the peninsula of Paria. The vegetation that surrounds the bay is typical tropical, which this protected due to this part of the peninsula is a National Park. Part of the group bath in these green turquoise waters of the bay and all we ate fish prepared by the fishing community.

At 5:00 pm we began our journey back to Guiria, reaching the pier at 7:45 pm. On this occasion pass through the Dragon’s Mouths was very pleasant since patrol boat was sailing on the waves as doing surfing. Once in Güiria we said goodbye to the crew that led us to the two confluences today and also thanks them as well as the Commander Calles throughout the collaboration. Then we went to a restaurant in Guiria to have dinner and share different lived experiences, which undoubtedly was the thrill of passage through Dragon’s Mouths and beautiful of the landscape of the Orinoco Delta and the Uquire Bay surrounded by the National Park Peninsula of Paria. Equally, we started our plans for a next confluence hunting in the near future. Tonight we went to bed very early because the next day we are going to face a long way of almost 13 hours driving back to our homes due to the heavy traffic on the road because Friday was holiday so this weekend many people had travel to the beautiful eastern beaches of Venezuela.
