19-Jun-2009 --

19-Jun-2009 --

The visit to this confluence of N5W74, raised one night by chatting with GPSYV´s fellows: Iván Ramírez Galicki, Leonardo Velasquez and Alfredo B. Remón , when I told them that I would go to work to Colombia, and talk about different points of confluence we could reach by land from Venezuela, specifically those near the Atlantic Coast of Colombia, to access them from the Northwest of Venezuela. During the conversation, I commented that I would be visiting Cartagena, Barranquilla, Medellin and Bogotá finally. Alfredo said at that time the existence of a CP in the vicinity of Bogota so I looked for Mapsource and then exported to Google Earth, to see its accessibility; in addition I read the published report of the first visit. Coincidentally it was a straight 5.8 km northwest of a costumer who I often visit, so I decided at that time to integrate it in my work during my trip to the wonderful and hospitable Colombia.

While in Colombia on Friday, June 19, at 7:30 am, I left the hotel and managed to make two commercial visits, prior to my third visit in Tocancipá, a city that is on the outskirts of Bogota and approximately 40 kilometers from my operations center.

I arrived to the third costumer at 11:20 a.m., I met a lot of traffic, was quoted at 11 am. At the conclusion of the visit, where the news was not good in terms of business and with the tight time, began to follow the route from my GPS to the point of confluence N5W74, which indicated that the road was about 10 km by car. Already I had alerted Mr. Octavio Zambrano, the person that drive me in Bogota for about 5 years, of activity that we would be develop and served as an excellent tour guide. Along the way we are the first stumbling block, at about 6 km from CP a bridge was under maintenance, so we had to rethink the way, which forced us to return and find out Briceño sector through Hato Grande farm, which is the residence for break weekend of Colombian presidency. During the trip I saw a large area of flower cultivation and salt processing companies.

In this area the main activity that takes place is the cultivation of flowers and mining. The point of confluence is located about 3 km from Zipaquira where is located the famous and spectacular underground salt Cathedral.

Being an approximate 400 meters from the car, I try to enter the area where it would be the point of confluence and contact the watchman, Mr. Bernard, I explain the activity to develop, and he said that in the past some people came to mark a point there and show me the direction of CP. Then followed a little more and we found a gate where we request the permission. Well at this point the car did not pass, and the approximation was 400 meters to CP.

Then following GPS instructions I climbed a mountain ridge, at an initial altitude of 2550 mtrs, to achieve the objective. Octavio had a problem in the leg and decided to go back and search the car and then pick me in a different way that I saw from the top, while I continued the catching.

I was walking with formal shoe and clothing, temperature was pleasant and I had not refreshments at the end I did not need it. Well, I continued along the fence but at the same time the point of confluence was getting more far, then I called Octavio on his mobile phone and he told me that was stopped because some dogs were outside the car and they did not let him get off from the car :). In the meantime I was moving nearing the point of confluence. I met several horses, which meant that it was near the goal as the first visitors of this confluence, informed. Reaches the point N5° 00 '00.0', not the W74 00 ' 00.0 ", but the W74° 58' 75.0", but was still 130 meters to the finish, but had not way from this point of approach even closer to the goal.

With further study of the area from the top of the ridge and find another route, which was restricted by the construction of a new road, with the goal to the other side of the mountain. I said Octavio about this new route that would take us about 450 meters from CP, which was located in the San Pedro farm. We tried to contact people from the farm and the first that came was Maria, a sympathetic “costeña”, so I explained to her the activity to develop and she informed us that she was not authorized, and had to ask permission of the Administrator. Maria had no balance on her cell phone to call Mr. Felipe Peñaloza, the Administrator, and Octavio agreed to use his cell phone to do the call. I explained to Felipe about the reason of the visit and invite him to share the experience and he accepted.

We head north to reach 130 meters back from CP. Stopped and parked the car park and Felipe’s dog accompanied me to the confluence dance to reach the zeros. Quickly reached the zeros and took the photos! The personal satisfaction of having reached the PC N5 W74 was wonderful and I was very pleased.

The San Pedro farm has like the main business the breeding quarter mille horses. Finally back to Bogota to visit my last customer and to take my return flight to Caracas, and as any confluence hunters, recalling enjoyed visit and think about the new confluence in the future.
