24-May-2009 --

24-May-2009 --

The 24th of May of 2009 several members of Group GPS_YV Team Zulia decided to go in search of the confluence N10° W71°. Once read the reports of the previous visits and having studied its location in Map Source and Google Earth, at 08:00 a.m. a group of members congregated in La Victoria Gas Station (N10º34' 31” W71º30' 50”) to taste a succulent breakfast and to begin the trip towards the second contact point in Palma Soriana Gas Station (N10º14' 06.1” W71º13' 06.3”); where the members that live in Ciudad Ojeda were having breakfast and from here we all together set out for our so longed confluence.

Once it is completed the group of 12 hunters, at 10:00 a.m. we set off toward Bachaquero taking the Route 17, well-known as Lara-Zulia highway, to Machango town in Valmore Rodriguez County, approximately at 10:40 a.m.. We crossed in South direction in the junction to Savannah of Machango town. This route connects Route 17 with Route 3 and at this point the GPS showed that we were 8.6 km. from CP. After driving about 3.5 km., we took a dirt road in Southeastern direction that crosses the Machango River by an old metal bridge, where we stopped to admire the landscape and the environmental surroundings. We took some photos and we continued 2.7 km. ahead looking for San Isidro farm. Upon arriving we talked with Mr. Javier Rodriguez who is one of the guys in charge, explained our objective to him and asked for permission to enter because the CP is within this property. Mr. Rodriguez warmly acceded to give us permission and we thanked him for the support that lent us to continue with this nice activity.

Having the due permission, we returned 1.5 km. until finding the iron gate that gives access to a dirt road which we took, initially in southwestern direction ,later to the west. This is an internal farm road which was in good condition to travel in our off road vehicles. After driving 1.9 km. we got within 50 meters of the confluence point, parked the vehicles, and initiated the walk by a grassy footpath toward west, where we initiated the Confluence Dance up to we reached our objective. It was great to see all the companions trying obtaining the appraised zeros. The Point Confluence is located right on a leafy tree and at elevation of 30 masl.

After obtaining the objective we took the required photos to include them in the report as well as the different photos to remember. After culminating with the visit, we went to celebrate and to hydrate ourselves with cold and energizers drinks to refresh from the high heat and humidity which reigns in the area. Then upon the invitation of our companion Gregorio García, we set a new target to visit some natural spring of oil. We went about 10 km. by a dirt road that would connect to us with Route 3 and from there to continue about 20 km. up to Mene Grande town in Baralt County. Upon arriving at the site we could observe a hill with various oil springs which naturally flowed petroleum and water from the ground, in this high temperature zone. On this hill, Venezuela’s first commercial oil well, Zumaque 1, was completed the 31st July 1914 initiating Venezuelan oil production.

The main economic activity of the region is the oil production, harvesting fruit, as well as raising cattle and pigs. The climate in the zone is warm, abundant rains appear during the year which allows the producers to foment its agricultural and cattle activities.
