07-Dec-2008 -- The Ḥajj holidays in Saudi Arabia usually last for one week. All public facilities and the ministries are closed during this period. This allowed us a wonderful opportunity for another trip to the Rub` al-Khāliy, "The Empty Quarter". The goal of the trip was to explore the last 2 open confluences in the east of the Rub` al-Khāliy: 21N 54E and 22N 55E.

The first of the 2 points seemed to be pretty easy to reach (theoretically). Only 50 km as the crow flies away from the Kidan Trail, it looked like as simple as sleepwalking. However, once we got to the sand formations in this area, we realized that they reached a remarkable altitude.

In search of a suitable route we found paths made by heavy machinery through the sand mountains to allow even heavier machinery through for geological surveys of the desert and its oil fields. The height and characteristics of those paths could easily be compared to the mountains passages through the Alps.

The last few meters driving over the sabkha brought us to the Confluence. Upon our arrival we realized that we were not the only ones hunting for this Confluence. Judging by the foot and tire prints, somebody had passed through this point a day before us. Whereas the tire marks leading away from the Confluence showed that this team was also headed towards the other open Confluence.

It seemed history was repeating itself and memories of the story of Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott were becoming our reality. A race versus time had started for us. Who would reach the confluence 22N 55E first?
