10-Nov-2008 -- The 11th of November is Poland’s Independence Day commemorating restoration of independence from Russia, Austria and Prussia in 1918. This year the holiday fell on Tuesday what encouraged many people to take a day off on Monday and have a four days long weekend. The weather forecast was quite good as for mid-November so I decided to visit a confluence point south of Berlin on Monday.

The trip from Poznań went easy as there were not many trucks on the road due to the holiday. Coming from the Berliner Ring (Berlin Beltway) A10 motorway I took the Ludwigsfelde-Ost exit and headed south to Luckenwalde and Jüterbog. Between those cities I crossed parts of the 160 km long Fläming-Skate – inline skating route marked with rather uncommon road warning signs “Skate crossing!”.

In Jüterbog I went west and a couple of kilometers further, near a Renault showroom in Neues Lager, I turned to the south again. I crossed the railway tracks and entered a former Russian military air base in Altes Lager (English: Old camp). The camp was founded in 1870 when the Prussian military purchased the grounds and settled there the POW after the Franco-German war in 1871. The first airship port was built there in 1916 but it was soon pulled down according to the Treaty of Versailles. A new one was put up in 1935 and served the Luftwaffe until the end of WWII. After war the airport was taken over by the West Group of the Soviet Red Army and was in continuous operation until the completion of the Russian troops withdrawal in 1994 (four years after German reunification!). Since then it has not been used for military purposes any more. The runway was converted into a go-kart circuit and the aircraft shelters to boarding houses.

I parked the car near some run-down airport buildings and walked back ca. 300 m, first along the road and then across a vast meadow towards a wide-stretching tree. Having circled the tree I concluded that the point was exactly in its center. The usual confluence dance was hindered because of low-hanging tree’s branches. The sun shone quite brightly although low above the horizon and the temperature was very nice as for mid-November – + 15 ˚C.

I took the usual pictures and went to see the shelter “Albrecht” and the go-kart circuit. There were no visitors in either of these objects – the regular opening time is from April till October. After a pleasant 3 km long walk I returned to the car and drove to the village of Altes Lager and then back home.

Kolejny zbudowano w 1935 r. i służył on Luftwaffe aż do końca II wojny światowej.

Zaparkowałem samochód w pobliżu zrujnowanych budynków lotniska i poszedłem ok. 300 m, najpierw wzdłuż drogi, a następnie przez rozległą łąkę w kierunku rozłożystego drzewa.

Wykonałem tradycyjne fotografie i poszedłem obejrzeć schron „Albrecht” i tor gokartowy.
