THE LAST ONE OF LA PAMPA PROVINCE AND OF THE PARALLEL 36

This confluence was one of the multiple goals of the Agua Poca Expedition that, among others, was to crown one of the three volcanoes and to visit the last three “unvisited” confluences of La Pampa province.

After the successful 37°S 68°W, the same day in the afternoon we made the ascent to Agua Poca volcano, and because of that, the 36°S 67°W became strongly desired, being the only one “pampean” confluence left and the one that completed the line of thirteen Argentinean confluences along the 36 parallel, all of them already visited by me.

We had bad memories of our last visit, because we had found padlocks two years ago over the 36 parallel. But this time, we had planned a lot of alternatives, just in case.

Early in the morning we were gone from the precarious little hotel in Santa Isabel where we had spent the night, and we were driving along RN 143 to the north. First, we tried the easiest alternative (or to say it best, the one that seemed the easiest): the TGN Center-West Gas Pipeline’s track. The first gate on the route was opened easily, and gave us the illusion of a glorious ride along the maintenance road of the gas pipeline, but... a few kilometers ahead, another gate appeared, and it was closed and with explicit signs of “No Trespassing”.

There we tried to go east by a path in the scrubland that would guide us near other accesses that we knew, but it closed and got lost, so we had to abort the mission.

Back in la RN 143, we were ready to try our luck on the parallel road that was denied to us before, as it was very near. And again Gods guided our way: the gate that was closed two years ago was open for us now, and so we were 12 km far from the objective.

We went ahead along the parallel and every 4 km a new gate appeared, but fortunately, they were all open; we crossed the old but now dry riverbed of Atuel river, and in the moment that we saw the gas pipeline 2,5 km away form the confluence, we knew that we would have to finish the trip on foot.

Anyway, even if we couldn’t walk over the pipeline, we were able to cross it because the transversal gates didn’t have padlocks. Some minutes later we crossed meridian 67, 200 meters to the south of the confluence. Curiously, the confluence that’s more to the west, the 36°S 68°W, was also 200 m away from the road, but to the south, fact that showed that the interprovincial limit doesn’t match exactly with parallel 36, as it seems.

We jumped a seven-thread fencing and heading to the north we walked to Mendoza to catch quickly the long-waited 36°S 67°W, after a traditional and funny “confluence dance” to get zeros in minutes and seconds.

It was a huge happiness to achieve the goal of completing all objectives of Agua Poca Expedition: to climb the homonymous volcano, to catch the last three confluences in La Pampa, and to visit the thirteen Argentinean confluences of the Parallel 36.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED !!!!!!
