31-May-2008–

Returning to Caracas of a businesses trip to Boa Vista (Brazil) I had to make a stop in Manaus where due flights schedules it was necessary to spend a day. Like all confluences hunter when it travels, first thing to do it is to investigate for confluence is near the site, including before making any hotel reservation, I saw that practically in the North zone of Manaus within the population is the confluence S3° W60°. Given such opportunity, I contacted by email to Frederico Cesarino a new but very enthusiastic confluences hunter who lives in Manaus and had visited this confluence, deciding that the day Saturday 31 of May will pick me up at Manaus airport at 06:00 a.m.

As it was planned, I arrived at the airport of originating Manaus of Boa Vista Saturday May 31st 4:45 a.m. and at 06:00 a.m. Frederico picked me up at the airport. We left the airport and addressed toward north on freeway BR-174 and later in 2°59'41.29"S 60° 1'51.67"W we turned towards the right (east). In less than 5 minutes we were parking the vehicle in the avenue at only 55 mts from the confluence. We walked within a property and we began to descend by a slope in a forest. Due that today was extremely cloudy and the vegetation where we were walking was very dense, the receptivity of the GPS was very poor, so in spite of the long confluence dance we made, it was impossible to succeed to reach all the zeros on GPS reading, simply the GPS did not manage to change of reading in the coordinates while we walked. Given such conditions, we decided that the approach was sufficient and took the required pictures at 06:23 a.m. (the reading of the hour shown in GPS picture corresponds to Venezuela time and not to Manaus local time). This confluence is located at an elevation of 60.5 masl.

Later, Frederico left me at Taj Mahal Hotel in Manaus where I would stay to rest because I had not slept in 24 hours and would wait for my return is Venezuela. On the way to the hotel we talked about future plans that we both have to hunt confluences and detect that we have plans to visit some confluence north of Manaus and I suggested some confluence to him that he could visit in his trip that it would give to Houston TX in afternoon of this same day. We agreed to explore opportunities to visit altogether some confluences in my next trip to Brazil or on any trip of him to Venezuela

In the afternoon after a good rest, I made a long walk by Manaus downtown, arriving until the immense Amazon river, knowing among other things the City Market and the beautiful Theater House. At night, I had the opportunity to enjoy the closing the XII Amazonian Opera Festival playing “Turandot” of Giacomo Puccini.

This was my first confluence in the South-West world corner (S-W). Still I need to visit the Southeastern corner (S-E).

31-May-2008-
