2008 Ireland Tour
It's a drive up.
Continued from 53N-09W
Looking at the map this point looks to be very difficult, it seems to be a long way from the nearest tarmac road and literally in the middle of nowhere. Add to that is that is just about as far West as you can get...
A mere 118 miles from 53N-09W and I am approaching Achill Island, over the bridge -technically I suppose a bridge over the Atlantic - that is having major repair work done.
Turn sharp left along yet another single track road and keep going until the tarmac ends. The track continues and in a 4x4 you could continue, or if you didn't care about the suspension on your rental. I parked up and prepared to walk.
While I was getting kitted up I had a nice chat with an elderly lady. I tried explaining what I was doing, comparing the gps to a car SatNav, only problem with that was that she had never owned a car!
I set off along the track, taking the right fork when it split. You can walk (or drive) to within 200 feet of the CP! A bit disappointing really, looking at the map I expected more of a challenge.
An average reading gave accuracy of 4.9 feet and the views are fantastic. If you need evidence of the power of the gulf stream then ponder how it is possible that palm trees can grow and thrive outside at 54N
