#1: Looking north from point

(visited by David Wood and Tamara Wood)

09-Mar-2008 -- Continued from 13N 0.

We left Fada at 7 a.m. with a full tank of diesel fuel and a full belly from breakfast. Heading east to Ougarou we enjoyed the 30 minutes of travel on paved highway! Just east of Ougarou we turned south on the RR28 towards Tambaga. At a "T" in the road, we turned left (generally east) on the RD10. About 15 minutes later this road turned left towards Diapaga. Arriving in Diapaga (9:55 a.m.) we topped off the fuel tank and turned south on the R19. Near the cotton factory this road became the RD8.

Near Tansarga we turned east and the road continued on into one of the entrances to Park W on the Burkina Faso side. To our left there was a service road which seemed to skirt the edge of the park. We took it and after another turn we found ourselves looking at another entrance to the park.

A small weather-worn sign pointed north towards Diapaga and appeared to indicate a small bicycle path. We were able to drive within 2.8 km of the point on this path before stopping the truck (10:55 a.m.). Grabbing the water, camera, and GPS, we started hiking northeast.

Secretly, I've always wanted a confluence point on top of a mountain. As we hiked closed to the point, looming before us was a rocky, thorn-tree infested hill. Not exactly an idyllic spot, but still. Up and over and the point was located almost at the base of the far side.

Some of the photos were taken directly on the spot, but a few were taken up on top as well (all taken within 100 meters of the point). A quick snack and a gulp of water and we were back at the truck by 1 p.m.

Arriving at the truck we spoke with a curious old man and ended up asking him about the sign. Sure enough, there was a "market-truck" path cut through the woods to Diapaga. Though shorter, it was poorly maintained and did not save any time on the return trip. Since this point did not require as much time and effort as predicted, we decided to make our way on to Ouagadougou to spend the night. Only one point left in all of Burkina! Continue on with us to 12N 1W.
