06-Jul-2007 -- The Great Oman Offshore Confluence Hunt - Part 2 - 24N 58E

Continuing on from 24N 59E.

We cruised in a strait line due west towards 24N 58E. Distance was 106 km, and we made it in 2 hours.

Pretty much a non-eventful trip. We had the same troubles trying to drive over the top of the Confluence, and we got within 0.003 seconds of the thing. Water depth here was near 1000 m. Again the humid haze prevented us from seeing land, but I think you would have a fine view of the Oman Mountains on a clear day.

Opened a bottle of champagne and headed back to Masqaṭ - 75 km.

On the way back the Captain Saheem spotted some dolphins and his fishing instinct took over. We changed course and chased a huge school of dolphins, rapidly assembling the fishing gear. In no time we heard the line screaming out and Andrew reeled in a respectable black fin Tuna. We drove around trying for more. Wished we had some live mackerel for bait, but this was not a fishing trip. No more luck, and fuel was running low, so reeled in the lines and back on course to Masqaṭ.

Coming into Masqaṭ harbor is always a pleasure, a fantastic feeling of history when you see the old harbor and mountains. Currently a few oil tankers and cargo ships anchored off Masqaṭ.

Got back to dock about 14:00, feeling very pleased and very sunburnt. All in all we boated over 250 km and got two deep water ocean confluences in less than 7 hours.
