11-Oct-2006 -- With my workmate we were to attend a professional conference that was held in Dresden. At 9 AM we set off from Poznań, crossed the Polish-German border in Świecko at 11:20 and then headed south-west. It was the same route I traveled on June 30 when I visited 52N 14E. We even stopped for a refreshment break at the same place where I parked the car during my previous visit.

Via Lübben we reached the A13 highway and headed south. Some 20 km before Dresden we left the highway and at 2 PM we arrived at Meissen. The town became famous for its china (porcelain) manufacture that was the first one in the world outside of China. Located on the shores of the Elba river the town is surrounded by vineyards. We visited the Gothic Church of Our Lady (Meissen Cathedral) and climbed its quite high tower with beautiful view to the surroundings.

At 4 PM we resumed our journey and went south-west towards Chemnitz on A4 highway. My friend would rather have gone to the hotel in Dresden but I convinced him that a visit at the confluence wouldn’t have taken more than an hour. How wrong was I…

With some detours due to road works we reached a little town of Mittweida. From there it was ca. 2 km to the confluence. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a detailed map of the surroundings so I had to rely solely on GPS navigation. We turned into the road to Weinsdorf heading north-east but it seemed to me that we were going to far to the east. So we did a U-turn and came back to Mittweida. I was going to try out the next road heading north but there were many one-way and pedestrian area streets and we finished driving the S200 road which was a road too far to the west. But it took some time until I recognized my mistake…

I thought that perhaps we could access the point also from the west so we didn’t come back to Mittweida but continued our journey trying to get closer to the confluence. First we came to Lauenhain and the Kriebstein Reservoir (Talsperre Kriebstein). From there it was 1.8 km to our destination but the road dead-ended and if I had gone on foot I would have had to cross the Zschopau river coming out of the reservoir. So we went further to the north. We passed Tanneberg, Beerwalde, and came to the Kriebstein Castle (Burg Kriebstein) in Kriebethal at the north end of the reservoir. We were close to giving up but I managed to convince my colleague to have some more patience and we tried our luck at the other side of the lake.

On side roads we went via Erlebach to Falkenhain and finally came to Ringethal. Our patience finally got rewarded as GPS showed that we were closer and closer to the confluence. We crossed the Zschopau river in Ringethal and ca. 800 m after the bridge we pulled over. There was a huge pile of logs on the field. Several dozen meter behind it, after the power line, I found the “zero” point – among some little green plants. I took the usual pictures and we quickly hit the road. We came to Dresden at quarter to seven. It was my longest confluence search ever – being as close as 1.3 km from the confluence we did 32 km before we finally reached the point.

Z kilkoma objazdami spowodowanymi robotami drogowymi dotarliśmy do niewielkiego miasteczka Mittweida.

Najpierw dotarliśmy do Lauenhain i zbiornika Kriebstein.

Wykonałem pamiątkowe fotografie i szybko ruszyliśmy w drogę powrotną. Do Drezna dotarliśmy kwadrans przed siódmą.
