English narrative

03-Feb-2007 -- Story continues from 59°N38°E.

We drive again onto R104 road in north direction to Cherepovetc, pass the city and then get into the A114 road (Vologda-Saint-Petersburg) and turn to the West. That was uneasy driving. Following trucks raised a dense snow dust so nothing can be seen through it. But we had patience to drive up to the turn towards Grishkino village. The road to Grishkino was quite picturesque; trees stood near the road edge were bent down by the weight of show, they formed white tunnel, and we sometimes touched their branches. In Grishkino we turned left onto a small dirt road and reached Sergeevo. The road ends, but there is only 3 km to our CP here.

In Sergeevo we contrived to stick in snow. With the little help of local gentlemen we got out, lost 40 minutes, otherwise we’d lost several hours. Moreover we tried to drive into the forest on tractor road, but collected ourselves and came back. By the way, it was hard job to drive backward onto white snowy road among white snowy field.

We found a small place for parking near some fence, equipped with our skis and went to the confluence point. At the beginning we went onto the road where a tractor dragged stems of cut trees. Soon we met loggers. There was a nice needle’s smell there. The boys asked us what we are searching for. Oh, these questions again! New version: usually we were asked about our destination. We hesitated a little and loggers immediately defined that we were searching either for gold or oil (sure, what else could be found in Russia?). We joked we’re exploring for new pipe-line path, and then the lads asked about the number of the forest block we need. We explained we didn’t niggle with any blocks; passed round their forest allotment and went deep into the forest.

The forest wasn’t very friendly. Hardly recognizable loggers path was lost, trees began quite dense, and we forced to blaze a new ski-track. Finally we got into the marsh. Snow was deeper here, but we could go by a straight line. We again entered a dense forest when it was 170 meters to the CP. Sometimes we really squeezed through snow-covered trees. GPS signal was unstable, so we reached the point with 20m accuracy. The point is located in the coniferous forest, 150 meters far from the marsh.

Our back way was much easier, so we went onto ski-track we made before.

CP visit data:
