03-Feb-2007

One of the first Russian confluence hunters Alexander Labanov usually concludes his narratives with the slogan “The hunt goes on!” (for some reason he talks this only for English-language readers). Well, here we’re continuing the hunt! And we planned (since last year) to start the continuation in the Vologodskaya oblast’ [Vologda region], to find the marsh points on the 59-th parallel, from 35-th till 38-th meridians, so the winter is the best time for them!

But we were bearing in mind the experience of our compatriot Artem Frolov and his mates, who gave up at 800 meters before the point 49°N83°W in their first attempt. They drove more than 1000 km to their target, but shortage of daytime and extremely deep snow stopped them. So we had to do our best for preparation. We refused to equip with snowshoes having preferred the skis. Moreover, we took 3 pairs for two of us. Two pairs of usual (cross-country) skis and one pair of hunting skis (confluence hunting, I guess), which are shorter and wider than usual. Our choice was stipulated by possible large distance of skiing (you can not go fast with snowshoes) and by our hope on low snow level so there wasn’t snow by the end of January.

Thus, what could we expect there for? Snowfall, hard freezing, impassable roads? And of course short daylight time. That’s because without serious examination of our equipment we didn’t dare to conquer the point 59°N35°E, so it is located far in the marsh, in 10 km distance from the road. Instead of this point we planned to try visiting two points at 60-th degree north.

Friday, 2 February 2007 (day 1)

We started from Moscow at 6.30pm. Having dragged in the Friday traffic jam we finally left Moscow and reached Sergiev Posad where we had dinner. There was light traffic after that, until Uglich. The road was almost empty but snow covering didn’t allow to drive fast. The night was cloudless, frosty, and under the full moon we heard music and enjoyed with friendly conversation. Suddenly we discovered that we moved to the East to Yaroslavl’ while we needed to hold northern direction, towards Rybinsk. We changed our course and drove through Tutaev and finally reached Rybinsk We passed through the city without any problems and then we were attentive and at last entered Cherepovetc. Approximately 10 km before the city limit we located the turn onto the road to Vichelovo where we’d need to turn tomorrow. Obviously the passable road existed, and it was cleaned after snowfall. But one problem was remain in abeyance: where does disappear the road R104 (Sergiev Posad –Cherepovetc)?

Only in 2.30 am (after 565 km drive) we reached the reserved hotel. The hotel has the “tasty” name “Azot” [Nitrogen], it wasn’t a cheap hotel so the room price was $106 (including preliminary reservation). However we leaned we may stay here two nights so the checkout time is the next day’s noon, i.e. at 4-th February! Well, we’ll consider it as a reserved variant if something will happen unexpectedly.

Saturday, 3 February 2007 (day 2)

At 7.30am we had a breakfast, but in neighbor hotel, which was in the same building. The morning was frosty as yesterday’s evening. So then we went through the entire city to the south, towards Rybinsk and soon reached the turn to Vichelovo. The road was more than clear of snow; there was surprisingly notable traffic there. More 2.5 km, and we were at desired turn: here the road leading strictly to the south turns strictly to the west. But we needed to go further to the south, 1 km more.

Oh, at last we took out our skis and went along the logger’s path. One kilometer to the south and 250 meters to the east and we are at the exact point! It locates in pine-tree forest plantations. It was first winter confluence skiing-tour for Maxim (only second one – for Vladimir).

CP visit data:

  • Driving distance (time) from the hotel: 34 km (40min)
  • Straight distance to CP from the parking: 1 km
  • Skiing distance (time) to the CP: 1.2 km (25min)
  • Time at the CP: 9.40
  • Altitude: 104 m
  • Path conditions: cutting path in the forest
  • Weather condition: overcast, –13°C

Story continues at 59°N37°E.

PS. In the DCP project cite this point is indexed as 4.7 km SW of Roslino, but Vichelovo is quite nearer, so it probably should be indexed as 2.2 km (1.4 miles) ESE of Vichelovo.
