English

05-Jan-2007 -- We intended to spent our Christmas (Russian orthodox) vacation in Latvia at Sasmakas lake (Kurzeme, Talsi region, 57°20’23”N, 22°38’34”E). Extraordinary warm and snowless winter changed our plans and we replaced our skiing with sightseeing and confluence hunting.

Our second trip was to Kuldiga and Ventspils. Kuldiga is called as a “heart of Kurzeme”; it was first mentioned in 1242. It joined the Hanseatic League in 1368. Wikipedia said that the main sight in Kuldiga is Ventas rumba, a 240-meter wide natural waterfall which is possibly the widest in Europe. The waterfall is located at 56°58’09”N, 21°58’48”E (right bank), which is only 3.6 km from CP.

Having driven from Talsi we first went to the confluence point 57N22E. We reached Mezhwalde, small settlement near Kuldiga. Then, after second try I found a dirt road towards the CP and parked in 600 meters from it. Here there was a tiny forest road in the proper direction. We went onto it. Last 200 meters we went through the mixed forest. We found the point on a ravine’s slope. Unfortunately I forgot my compass; it was overcast and I made shots in a very approximate directions.
