21-Aug-2006 -- Riga, the Latvian capital seemed to us much more lively than Vilnius (or more hectic?). We walked along the central market with a gigantic supply of fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and bread. In the remarkable Latvian occupation museum in Riga's old town the changeable history of the Latvians and that one of their country is represented clearly and impressively.

We left Riga on the A10 in the direction of Ventspils in order to visit N57E23. The weather got rainier and rainier and in Tukums we had a short but strong shower which converted the streets to little rivers.

A short way behind Tukums our GPS-receiver showed the CP in a distance of 330 m on the left side of A 10 in the dense woods. We parked our car on the gravel stripe next to the street, put on rubber boots and followed the arrow to the woods passing several rubbish heaps next to a little way. At last we had to turn left into the thick undergrowth - obeying the GPS. We had to pass wet slippery branches and the bad GPS-signal didn`t make it easier. So the last 330 m took almost half an hour. Finally we could take a photo of the exact spot (with all zeros) and all the other necessary pictures of N57E23.

We went back to the street directly, supported by the route stored in the GPS-receiver. So we reached it more comfortably except for a little slope, which we had to slip down at the end. There were another 550 m along the street up to the car which had dry shoes and clothes ready for us. Latvia presented itself from a much more pleasant side afterwards in Jurkalne at the Baltic Sea shore, where isn`t a confluence, but water, sand and warm sun, however.
