#1: Looking North onto the Confluence Point

(visited by Gordon Smith and David Chambers)

23-Apr-2006 -- After completing 19N 55E, we had made our way along Wādiy Katibit and 70 km later left sealed road for a graded road camping approximately 45 km from Šisr, where we were hoping to find fuel.

This was the toughest one of the three to complete, however with hindsight it could have been easier. With only two vehicles we were taking a bit of a risk should something befall one of them, and our backup was a satellite phone for emergency use only.

Leaving Šisr (next to the Lost City of Ubar) and having refuelled there, we set off on unsealed road to Fasad, then north passing a fountain of water from one of three bore holes, until we were close to the confluence point (40 km), and then leaving track to tackle the dunes.

With only two minor stucks we reached the confluence point in a sabkha pan surrounded by high dunes after 4 hours of sand driving and about an hour before sunset. Our camp that night was visited by several scorpions and many camel spiders, as well as a friendly praying mantis.
