#1: Confluence point

(visited by Craig Hall)

11-Jan-2006 --

I approached this confluence point from the Northeast, ultimately starting from Cherokee Village, AR. I traveled to Melbourne, AR where I remained on Hwy 9. This route eventually put me about 200 feet from the confluence point.

I must say that this was one of the most scenic drives I have ever experienced. The only way it would have been more beautiful is if the leaves were on the trees. The roads were extremely hilly and curvy. I had to drive very slowly on these roads since I often could not see more than 100 feet in front of me (due to the extreme curves and hills). Many times I was just praying there was nothing coming straight at me on the other side of the hill. Despite the slow pace and slight nausea caused by Hwys 56 and 9, I was intrigued by the picturesque landscape.

I drove as close as I could to the confluence on Hwy 9, where there was a convenient shoulder near a dirt road that would lead even closer to the confluence. However, the dirt road was in too rough of shape to continue with the car. No matter. I was just a few hundred feet from the confluence in what looked to be relatively simple terrain.

I walked to the confluence point with ease. When I achieved all zeroes, the GPS indicated accuracy at 29 feet. I did not see many of the items referenced by the prior visitors. There was no stone foundation to be found. No bus. I also did not see the red stake pounded into the ground by the prior visitors that marked the confluence point. It possibly could have been removed with the other items. After all, it has been almost 5 years since the last visit.

In all, this was a relatively simple confluence visit. The views were stunning. I would love to visit sometime in the Fall, when the leaves are changing color.
