05-Nov-2005 --

We started planning the visit to S43 W71 confluence several weeks ago using Earth Google, several maps from several Government Offices as references and a borrowed GPS.

We left Esquel at 13:26 of Saturday November 5th, after convinceing Monica to join us.

We arrived at W71 through the glorious route 40, we left the car and started walking towards North direction across a wavy and thorny terrain.

According to the GPS we were just 3.7 Km away from the confluence, but the GPS didn’t see the hills obviously. We walked for over 4 hours evading thorns, lot of thorns, ascending and descending hills and telling Monica “we are almost there”. An “armadillo” crossed our path and we were about to make it lunch, but we decided to let it free after the “subtle” and very clear recommendations of Monica.

We stopped several times to rest and to take the thorns out of us while convinced Monica that we were closer. After 3 hours of walking and looking at the GPS just to see the direction avoiding looking at the distance.

Once we got there, it took almost 45 minutes to make the GPS get the right position at S43 00 00 W71 00 00, which made an eagle curious and flight over us, surely in order to find out if we were food or just crazy people walking with no direction.

We took some pictures quickly before the sunset.

Once we reached our goal, and tired of so many hills, we decided to take a short-cut through the cannons.

The whole trip took about 7 hours and non-stop complaints from Monica, who at the end said: “I don’t like walking”.

Anyway, we are already making plans for future visits to confluences nearby, but it will take a while to convince Monica to join us one more time.
