10-Aug-2005 – Two ferries point

That was a last point in our journey to the Russian North (the previous successful CP was N62E41, and then N62E38 incomplete). We could visit the point N60E38 only after our second attempt.

We drove from Kenosersky National Park on the P2 road to the West and then to the South on the road P5 (Medvezhegorsk-Vologda). In Lipin Bor the road goes South-East but we needed to move to the South along Beloe [White] Lake toward its South-East part. There is the CP in that side, and the river Sheksna flows out of Beloe Lake there. Sheksna was a small river but now it is a part of the Volgo-Baltic channel.

Roads in the Russian North have quite low traffic but the last 20 km after Lipin Bor the road was suspiciously empty. Soon the reason was clear. There was a ferry across the Sheksna and there was one local car waiting for the ferry. The ferry was on opposite side and didn’t work due to the strong wind! The ferryman told us (by phone) that the rolling didn’t allow to enter the ferry’s deck but “in the evening the wind will calm down and the ferry will go on”. There was 7.4 km to CP (pic #8), 7 pm and we decided not to wait. We drove back to Lipin Bor and further onto P5 to the Kirillov city to spend the night. We decided to conquer the CP next morning. There will be another road and another ferry.

In the morning we departed towards the CP and reached another ferry. It works from 7am to 7pm and there is a break from 12.40 till 15.00. It was 8.30am. We had to drive to Moscow that day (about 600 km) and so we had to be back in time on noon’s ferry.

It took 10 km on gravel road from the ferry to the parking spot nearest to our target. Having looked at a satellite photo we saw the point is situated in the field. We had a choice: either to go by a straight line through the forest or to make a detour through the fields and meadows. To park the car we turned onto a tractor road which led us where we need and then turned. We left the car on the edge of a rye field (pic #6). It’s about 2 km left and we walked on the azimuth line.

First 400 m laid on a rye field. It was the easy and pleasurable part. Then we frightened a flock of cranes. The entrance to the forest was a dense fence made from young trees. We squeezed through the “green fence” and continued our straight line trip. We crossed several strips of meadow and forest. Finally the usual kind of fence… and we were in the field with our point. The point is attractive! It was a mowed meadow on a small hill slope.

There was a tractor road near the point, so we think it’s accessible by car in dry weather. But it isn’t clear how to find this road… perhaps via Glushkovo-Sheikino. As we were disturbed by the “fences” we decided to go back by fields, which laid westwards. We were sorry for our decision very soon. There were meadows, unmown. To go neck-high in the grass is as to go waist-deep in the water. We returned to the forest.

One way trip took about 40 min both ways.

Thus, that point finalized the confluence program of our journey. We visited seven points; six of them were being visited for the first time.

CP visit data:

  • Straight distance to CP from the road: 1.9 km,
  • Walking distance: 2.2 km
  • Walking time: 35 min,
  • Elevation 130 m,
  • Path conditions: rye and grass fields, forest.
  • Weather condition: sunny
