English narrative

11-Jun-2005 -- We planned this trip long ago. We intended to visit four confluences north of Bashkirya, moving from the East to the West along the 56th latitude. Since the road to Bashkortostan runs only one kilometer from the confluence 57°N 57°E, where we have been already last winter, we decided to drop in there also, to shoot the summer views of the spot. Furthermore, as we recently learned, a longest watersealed cave of the former Soviet Union is located next to the village Orda, through which our way passes. Why not drop in?

9:15 AM: I joined the other members of the team and we headed south on the Perm-Yekaterinburg highway. It is cloudy. Synoptics forecasted rains throughout the weekend.

11:05 AM: After 102 kilometers from Perm we turn off on the road to Orda, an administrative center of the region in which the confluence is located.

11:17 AM: We asked the way to the cave at the bus station in Orda. To get there, one should turn right, cross the bridge over the Kungur River and drive over the Kazakovskaya Mountain along the asphalt road.

11:25 AM: We parked the car next to the barrage across the road. The man in the tracksuit approached us from the cabin. He is a person on duty and he took us for the team of divers which was awaited here. Nevertheless, he showed us the pass to the cave and put on the light. The beautiful view of the Kungur River is opened from the mountain, overgrown by the feather grass. Some predatory birds hovered in the sky. The entrance into the cave is at 57° 10.9248'N 56° 53.1924'E.

11:30 AM: We get down into the cave, from where came a cold blast. The pass goes rather steeply downward. The metallic ladder is mounted for the convenience of visitors. After descending by it we found ourselves in the large grotto. Single stalagmite is on the stone to the left of us. A small underground lake is straight and to the right of us. Another ladder is descending into it. The water is very clear. This is the entrance into the watersealed part of the cave, the galleries of which are stretched out more than three kilometers. The divers from Russia and abroad are coming here for their dose of adrenaline. We photographed ourselves in the interior of the cave and then rose upward.

11:53 AM: We get outside. Transition from the cave cold to the solar heat is striking, although the external temperature is not so high. We ascended to the cabin, where person on duty met us. He confirmed that the cave has the longest watersealed part among the caves of the former Soviet Union. Nowadays the territory around the cave is rented by the private person, who hosted divers for the money. We got an impression, that the cave arches, which consist of the gypsum rocks, are not strong enough. The person on duty confirmed that collapses occur regularly, the latest was last spring. We said goodbye to him and returned to the car. Along the road we shot the surrounding karstic funnels and view of Orda with church from the Kazakovskaya Mountain. It is necessary to say, that the karst is very pronounced in the Perm region. It is known more than 600 karstic caves there at present, the most famous of them is the Kungur Ice Cave, that is only in thirty kilometers from here.

12:25 PM: Goodbye Orda!

12:48 PM: Our next stop is not far from the small River Medynka, in one kilometer distance from the confluence. After the winter visit of 57°N 57°E I wrote that in the summertime it is possible to reach this confluence without even getting out the car. However, after the week of rains the road became impassable. We decided to go to the confluence on foot along the slope of the ravine, overgrown by the efflorescent wild strawberries. Small river Medynka after rains overflowed and got the color of cocoa.

1:01 PM: I always was delighted with GPS. We are exactly at the same place, that we were last winter! We took all the necessary photos.

1:12 PM: We left the confluence and headed back.

1:25 PM: Return to the car. On the side of road we had a lunch. The peeking out sun is favored for the placid mood. However, it is time to go further.

2:04 PM: To the south! Our next target is the confluence 56°N 57°E in the Republic of Bashkortostan.
