25-Jun-2005 -- The adventure begins at N8 W66. We had a very relaxing sleep, all night was raining but not hard. At dawn, were still raining a little bit and a large amount of bird especially rose headed parrots (“Pyrrhura rhodocephala”) and plain antvireo (“Pitangus sulphuratus”), were constantly singing. At 8:00 am stopped to rain and we all get out from our tens and start preparing breakfast, gather everything and prepare departure to our next target, CP N8 W65.

After we picked everything from the camp site, we departed at 9:30 am. Despite the distance in straight line to our target it is around 110 km, we have to drive more than 350 km because there is not road of any type at the parallel N8 between meridian W65 and W67. Indeed this area it is characterized by wide savannas, but there are many rivers and creek oriented North-South and because there are not roads, of course there are not bridge either. This situation would difficult the approach to CP from west and it will take more time try to go close to parallel N8 compare go by the long path. So our plan consist in return to north by the roads used the previous day up to the well known national road named “carretera de los llanos” crossing parallel N9 and going close to it. From here addressed to east up to the road to Zuata passing meridian W65, then turn to south and pass San Diego de Cabrutica town. We continue to south by the road that goes to Mapire, a town beside Orinoco River. With the help of maps created by our GPS group, we continue getting close to our target, but at a distance of 8 km we took another dirty road, this one not shown in our maps. We crossed Cachicamo creek, hopefully not too deep despite we are in the raining season and at a distance of 2 km, we changed once again to another dirty path toward southwest and we approached up to 500 mts from CP. Here we decided the final approach to CP by the savanna 100% off road, but at 250 mts we discover a huge gap in the land, where raining water runs downhill. We analyzed the area and returned about 150 mts and addressed toward north, from where we could reach the lower zone where CP it is located. In a couple of minutes we were doing the splendorous “Confluence Dance”, this time with our Land Cruiser.

When we leave the vehicles started to rain, but anyway we took the required pictures as well as the picture of the proud group on the spot. CP it is located at 95.5 masl. The economical activity in this zone it is based on cattle raising, fruits harvest like papaya, and in special the oil exploitation. This CP is on the world biggest extra heavy oil accumulation well known as “Orinoco Oil Belt”, with oil reserves above 230,000,000,000 barrels of oil. These reservoirs are not wide exploited yet, but the actual production it is more than 600,000 barrels of oil per day.

On the way to CP, we were pending of different site to set our camping that day, and pre-select one very good spot. So we returned few kilometers to camp beside Cachicamo creek and after set our camp site up, we proceed to celebrate inside the water the new confluence hunted as well as to freshen us up a little bit. The menu that night was pasta with a Ragu salsa. All the food was totally sold out and I do not know if it because the salsa was very good or everybody was starving. We spend the night eating, enjoying mother nature, making jokes about all the expedition trip and of course setting plans, for the next confluence hunt expedition that we are going to do in the very near future.
