12-Jun-2005 -- PRIMER CACERIA EN SOLITARIO:

12-Jun-2005 -- FIRST LONELY HUNTING
After working, Saturday June 11th, I believed interesting to go to look for confluences although in this opportunity, my usual partner Atilio, wouldn’t go with me because he was gone to Buenos Aires to see his family.
This time, for doing it different, I took my tent, my sleeping bag and something to eat (and drink) and I went away from Santa Rosa to Lihuel Calel National Park (http://todo-argentina.net/Geografia/Parques/lapampa/Parque_Nacional_Lihuel_Calel/), where I would sleep in my tent at the foothills of the beautiful and surprising pampeans mountains, very near of the DC 38°S 66°W. I proposed myself to catch two confluences on meridian 66° W, the 38°S and the 37°S in the same day, so it was good to stay early near the first DC.

I arrived to the park almost at night. I built the tent and enjoyed the loneliness and the heaven with an incredible quantity of stars, meanwhile I had a light dinner and a good glass of rose wine. Sunday morning, the day dawned sensational. Very early, I had breakfast, put my things in the pick up and went away to Puelches, where I refilled the tank before going into the desert. I didn’t know that I would return many times to this town in the day. I took the 107 road, between the lakes “La Dulce” and “Urre Lauquen” along the west coast of the Salado river and when the GPS indicated 5 km to DC 38°S 66°W , I stopped to talk with a lonely driver of a motor grader of Vialidad Provincial, Abel Ziarriz (el “Rubio), who was working there.

I talked about my intentions and like always happens in these places, my loneliness was finished because he offered to go with me. Meanwhile we analysed how we can reach the DC, some vehicles that passed by stopped to offer help. In these lonely places, all people know each other. Among all, we arrived at the conclusion that the confluence was inside the property “El Desafío Pampeano”. To avoid problems for the access it would be better to ask permission to the owner, “Quitito” Duran in Puelches town.

Rubio and his dog, Ciro, ascended to my Suzuki, Ciro looked like as always travelled in my car. The owner wasn’t at home, but his sister indicated us the address of the peasant in charge of the ranch, “Cacho” Navarro. We went there and again, it was easy to get the permit. He acceded immediately to allow us the entrance and he offered to go with us to reach the DC.
To me, the Cacho´s face looked like known. When we talk to him during the trip, we realized ourselves that he had worked with me in the transmission line Puelches – Pichi Mahuida, some years ago. The world is very small.
We took again 107 road and a little to the north of parallel 38, we turned left to the west and went into the ranch “El Desafío Pampeano” where found a “potrero” (piece of land limited by a fence for breeding cows inside it) of 5 kilometres per side that undoubtedly included the DC. These “potreros” have a track in the perimeter and seldom there are possibilities to access by car because the peasant enter riding horses.

We began to navigate the perimeter clockwise across the coast of the big “La Dulce” lake and after to surround almost completely the DC, we were only at 2300 meters to the east of it.
The next sep would be to walk but I saw the forest and realized that there were some chances to progress with my car because the fence had some type of gate and the forest wasn’t very closed. “Cacho” didn´t want to enter with the car because he was afraid the tires would puncture. I insisted and he acceded.
Plenty of “off road”, we went into slowly on “alpatacos” and “jarillas" and we reached another fence at 1500 meters of the CP. We left the Suzuki and we walked to the east to the CP. After fifteen minutes, we reached the CP bordered by the silhouette of Lihuel Calel mountains. Mission accomplished: no minutes and no seconds in the GPS display.

We went back over our steps and we returned to the trailer of “Rubio” on 107 road where we had a light lunch with cheese, salami and rose wine to celebrate the success.

After lunch, I returned again to Puelches to leave Cacho at his house. Rubio and Ciro always with me in the car. At 4 pm, I went back on 107 route in the same place where in the morning I found them. I thanked and greeted Rubio, a new friend.
Although the sunlight wouldn’t be enough to attempt another DC, I went to the north at least to see the place. So I was leaded by the lonely 107 road to La Reforma town; this route sure is impossible to pass if it is raining because is built over the riverbed of the Salado river. When the sunlight was disappearing I continued to the north by 17 route and then turn right to the east by 143 route to Chacharramendi where the asphalt waited to lead me to Santa Rosa.
To my surprise, 143 route, promoted like “Corredor Bioceánico” was awful: unbelievable sandy paths in many times were ready to catch me in the middle of the darkness. My Suzuki in Low 4WD is an hero (the driver too) . I was at 25 km of the another DC but not enough to submit as “incomplete visit”. It will be next time.
