English narrative

22-Sep-2004 -- We intended to visit this point during a business trip in the city of Irkutsk – the capital of Eastern Siberia. We chose it from the two nearest CPs to Irkutsk as it has primary status, and is located on the way to Baikal Lake.

Early in the morning our team hit the road from Irkutsk to the south along Baikal highway. The plan was to see Baikal Lake and Angara river head, to taste the gifts of the local nature and, if possible, to find the CP. We have had a brilliant sunny day. The whole week before was dry in Irkutsk. (By the way, next day it snowed and the temperature fell).

The first stop we made was halfway to the lake on the beautiful shore of Irkutsk water basin in Tal'cy (Pict. 2). The open-air museum of architecture and ethnography is here.

Then we reached the next settlement, Bolshaya Rechka. From here began the country road to the CP, to which it was about 18 kilometers in a straight line. We drove into a regional forest district where we discovered that we can't reach the spot by car, that there is a post with a gate in Cheremshanka village, and that the forest warden is on a trip and there is not any transport.

Upset, we continue our way to Listvyanka settlement on the shore of Baikal Lake where drown our sorrows immediately (Pict. 3). I leave the pleasant right to describe this unique lake to another hunters, especially as five(!) CPs are located on its surface. Here I only informed that this lake holds at least 3 records. This is the oldest (25 million years) and deepest (1637 m) lake in the world with the greatest fresh-water supply (23.6 thousand cubic km).

In Listvyanka we tasted the best kinds of Baikal fish – omul and grayling. Residents smoked and sold this delicious fish directly on the beach (<Pict. 4). Here we managed to meet a Listvyanka forestry employee who, after long persuasion, agreed to take us to the specified area in his UAZ car (Pict. 5). Later we understand that we were just lucky with a guide because only a professional is able to reach that place, who perfectly knows the local roads and the capabilities of his car.

We got in, some into the cabin and some into the open body of the UAZ, and started out for Cheremshanka. From Bolshaya Rechka it was 12 kilometers on dirt road with deep puddles. Instead of the expected settlement Cheremshanka there was one house. The road was partitioned off with a barrier, but we quickly passed further.

After Cheremshanka the road forked. The smaller road lead to the south and simultaneously was the bed of a small river. We should drive 8.5 km on it (Pict. 6). The first meters of the way forced us to doubt the success of our plan. We were thrown from side to side, the car tilted way over and plunged into water to the hood. Over the next couple of kilometers we started to think about how get out from here. However our guide drove the amphibian forward on the terrible road perfectly at ease, and distance reduced inexorably.

It is necessary to mention that our CP was in the territory of Baikal's National Park. It is in the Big Five of the national parks in Russia. The park extends along the western coast of Baikal and covers the southern part of the Seaside Ridge with prevailing heights of 900 - 1000 meters. Most parts of the territory are covered with larch and pine taiga. More than 500 endemic kinds of plants and animals live on its territory. You can meet a brown bear here.

We managed to approach the CP to a distance of 1.5 km. The road lead upwards in the direction of the point, but we decided to not risk any more and walked the rest of the way. In very dry weather it is possible to approach the CP up to 200 m - a unique opportunity for a taiga! At the end of the trip we had to climb up the steep slope about 200 meters high. Climbing on top of the hill (Pict. 7), we found a sacred place (Pict. 8), took pictures of the exciting taiga views (Pict. 9, 10, 11) and hastened back to Irkutsk as it started to darken.

By the way, this is one of the few CPs in Russia which has an antipode (on Isla Tacna in Chile, not found yet). Siberians were very much surprised, when they learned that their antipodes live in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, near the Strait of Magellan connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
