#1: The Confluence from 50 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

03-Jan-2017 -- This is the fourth out of five reports on reaching confluence points during our trip through Colombia. Two of them had not been visited successfully before. The story starts at 5°N 74°W and continues from 7°N 73°W.

After a city walk through Girón for a couple of hours we set off for Barrancabermeja at noon. When we reached the city, at 2:30 PM we decided to directly head to the confluence point. Even though the straight line was only 15 km, it took us 1.5 hours to drive there: first though the city, then crossing the huge bridge over Magdalene River. On the western side of the river, the road goes through a town called Yondó with some poor looking neighbourhoods – probably housing for oil workers.

A couple kilometres after passing through Yondó, the road conditions worsened and soon our car came to its limits. But by driving slowly and carefully, we were able to bring the car up to 99 m to the confluence point. Along the road there are single farmhouses and also people walking, cycling or driving on the track. So one can say that this area is quite populated.

From the road, we had to simply walk down over a meadow to reach the confluence point. From old tree trunks we concluded that this meadow must have been forested a couple years ago. Now it is most likely used for cow farming.

The question arises why this easy-to-reach confluence had not been visited before. I guess because Barrancabermeja is an oil industry town and therefore off the beaten tourist track. Also its paramilitary takeover and terror in the past may have scared off visitors.

We drove exactly the same way back (there is only one road to take) and reached Barrancabermeja just before dusk.
