(visited by Alpar Kovacs)

28-Jul-2019 -- 68°N 20°E is located 18.5 km NWN from Kiruna, the northernmost town in Sweden. The closest road to the confluence point is the E10 which connects Kiruna with Narvik. This road intercepts the Rautas nature reserve [Natura 2000 network]. The total area of the reserve is 677 square kilometers and is covered by alpine birch forest and vast wetlands and lakes. The reserve is an important area for reindeer herding.

I took the bus from Kiruna to Rautas [Sámi: Rávttas] which lies between two branches – Alit Suorri and Lulit Suorri – of the Rautas River [Swedish: Rautasälven, Sámi: Rávttaseatnu]. The best option to get closer to the site was the right bank of the river as there are not significant tributary streams on that side. I found a track that is used by the locals to get to their cabins which are on the left side of the river, only the boat docks are on the right side. Close to the CP before the river is splitting again into two branches and the water level was enough low to cross the river. Walking 600 meters on the foothills of Gáiddasvárii [696m] I found finally the CP in dwarf birch [Betula nana] vegetation. On the way back in the marshland I meet with some locals who picked cloudberry [Rubus chamaemorus, Swedish: Hjortron], so I started to look after that delicious fruit, but the mosquitoes didn’t let me to spend too much time in one position.
