16-Jul-2011 – The mountain weather is unpredictable as usual. At the afternoon we set off to the east from station “134-th km” (Vorkuta – Labytnangi railroad). It was warm (about +17°C) and sunny. Therefore, our mood was militant, buoyant, we were full of strengths and desire to conquest cherished confluence. But the higher we climbed up, the more wind grew stronger. At the eighth km of our hike, about 3 pm, we got into a hurricane, the rain with strong gusts of wind. So we got wet to the skin after 10 minutes! All this started exactly at the time of ascent to the watershed, so our movement to the top was accompanied by the struggle with elements and heavy thoughts about the fact that the half of the planned route has not yet been passed. It's lucky that an hour earlier, we had time to make a halt at Sen'ka-Shore creek, and sipped some hot tea we heated on a gas-burner. Then the sun came in again and our further descent was even without the gusty wind and rain, but it was complicated by the fact that our feet often slipped on the wet boulders composing the ridge.

Then we went along the creek to Khanmey river, and here came the new misfortune – in the evening, when the elements subsided, a lot of mosquitoes attacked us. Crossing the river was surprisingly fast and easy. We wandered along the river bank, and soon we found a good place for fording. We overcame Khanmey wearing in special boots or in shoe covers from the army protective kit. We were able to avoid deep pits and rapid currents. On the other bank the fatigue began seriously to be felt. In addition, it became dusk, and we had been thinking about overnight stay. But the goal, the confluence, did not allow to relax! And again we went uphill. Then suddenly I realized that the southern slope of Khanmey ridge on which we climbed, is completely devoid of descending water streams. Accordingly, the only one-liter army flask quickly drained away. The thirst and general fatigue made the ascent into a real trial and struggle with ourselves. I will not describe our long trial, I only say that just two of us could reach the confluence. The last ascent, more precisely it was the clamber on the steep slope, exactly in the middle of which the confluence located, was carried out using all four limbs. The slope here reaches 40 degrees. GPS reported the height 810 m above sea level.

After that it was descent (by autopilot) back to the river, searching for a camping place, dinner and a good night's sleep. Weather did not disappoint, it was not raining and the wind was not particularly bothered. The next day, we quickly crossed the Khanmey, and onto a tractor road we got to railroad station “141-th km” (Krasnyi Kamen') by 5 pm. It was little longer, but much easier and faster, with one passover of elevation change only 500 meters. Then we took a night train Vorkuta – Labytnangy, ferry across Ob' river, caught a track and at midnight we arrived to Salekhard city. Total hiking path in the mountains was 41 km. Here was a kind of marathon!
