(visited by Peter Scharfenberg)

25-Jul-2008 -- This confluence point (CP) is at an altitude of 0 m, not on the ice cap (cf. the legend) but 200 m off the shore of the peninsula "Erik den Rødes land", 10 km NNE of Narsaq, the nearest town. Niaqornaq, mentioned in the legend, is an abandoned settlement on the opposite side of the Bredefjord (Ikersuaq).

The coastal area in the vicinity of the CP is much steeper than the average ascent (30-35°) from the shore to the summits of the Kvanefjeld (878 m), an interesting site for geological studies, and the Ilimaassaq (1390 m), respectively. Nevertheless, we attempted to approach the place of desire from land as close as possible, as we had neither access to a kayak or a boat nor could we rent them.

From Narsaq we hiked 10 km NE up into the valley of the river "Narsaq elv". At 400 m altitude, SE of the Kvanefjeld, we decided to have our base camp. The other day the weather was extremely good (nearly cloudless sky) for the hike: ascent to the Kvanefjeld from SE and arrival at the coastal (Bredefjord) side. Here we found the mountains terraced. On nearly each of the terraces traces from sheep can be seen. The most serious problem was to find a path from one terrace down to the next one. Finally, at an altitude of 300 m between Kvanefjeld and Ilimmaasaq (photo #1 shows the 300 m terrace and a lower part of the Ilimmaasaq) we gave up - no access to the last terrace (200 m) without a rope. The photos 2-6 were shot somewhat behind the second lake of photo 1. For geographical details see the 1:100000 hiking map "Narsaq".
