17-Aug-2023 – Continued after 60°N 53°E.

Even during planning, I gave this confluence a category: difficult. As it turned out, the other two were no easier in their own way.

We had to get to the village of Lesnoy, which is 36 km from Loino. We decided to refuel motorcycles. To do this, we made a short drive to Rudnichny, where the nearest gas station was. Further along the same “paved” roads broken by timber trucks, we get first to Sozimsky, then to Lesnoy.

In the past, Lesnoy was the administrative center of the Vyatka forced labor camp, Vyatlag. After the camp itself, there are now two correctional colonies in the village. Previously, it was the main station of the Gayno-Kai railway of the Federal Penitentiary Service. From the Lesnoy station, a railway went deep into the taiga, the branches of which stretched for more than 300 km, entering the territory of the Komi Republic. Now this network of camps does not exist, and the railway is abandoned and dismantled. A railroad led north to the confluence. It turned out to be the only way available to us. I knew in advance that there was a trail along the railroad that you could ride on motorcycles. So we did.

At about noon we went first along the still existing tracks, and after the Brusnichnaya station along some sleepers lost in the sand. On our way came across wooden bridges over rivers, protruding sleepers and other obstacles. We saw the abandoned village of Brusnichny with still intact houses and even utensils hung at the porch. But it was clear that people had not lived here for a long time. We passed the lake, which bisects the embankment of the railway. Finally, we reach the abandoned Ima station, from which the shortest path to the confluence lay - 2.8 km of the taiga. But before that, we decided to eat. The planned lunch turned out to be on time: towards me, a truck was driving along the sleepers with one pair of wheels! We quickly pulled the motorcycles aside and let him pass. What would happen if we weren't here? Probably motorcycles would just be knocked on their side to pass.

We begin our journey in azimuth. This is where we first encounter the taiga forest: an impenetrable thicket, fallen trees, swampy places. The confluence turned out to be in a dense mixed forest.

Visit data:

  • Local time at CP: 14.20
  • Elevation above sea level: 209 m
  • Weather: sunny, +29°C

The return trip, both on foot and on motorcycles, seemed shorter, but it often happens. Already at dusk we reached Kirs, our base point. We spent the night at the hotel to gain strength before the next day and the next cobfluence 59°N 52°E.
