#1: View W into the Kitsigsut Strait with Archipelago and CP

(visited by Peter Scharfenberg)

01-Aug-2018 -- This CP is situated 15 km south of Nanortalik, the south most larger village (in greenlandic terms: a “city”), just half the way to Nasarmijit (Frederiksdal), Greenland’s south most settlement. For geographical details see the 1:250 000 Saga Map “Qaqortoq - Uummannarsuaq” or the 1:500 000 Saga Map “Sydgrønland” of the VIKING Polar Cruise Series, and for hiking in the area the author’s paperback guide “In der Natur Grönlands: Wanderführer Südgrönland” may be consulted.

For the CP is on the sea in the middle of the strait Kitsigsut Tunuat between the Archipelago Kitsigsut and the mainland, we had had the boat (Picture 8), connecting (during summer) on each Wednesday Nasarmijit (Picture 6) regularly with the rest of South Greenland. This, however, sounds more simple than it is. The strait is 5 km broad, most of the islands of Kitsigsut are less than 40 m high, and behind them a stormbeaten North Atlantic.

First attempt on 25 July. Visibility excellent but strong wind the day before. The sea was too rough for the TARGA 37 boat. Thus we returned to Nanortalik and had to change our destination, now the Tasermiut Fjord, Settlement Tasiusaq.

One week later, 1 August. A rainy day, visibility some hundred meters, but the sea turned out to be calm enough to sail from Tasiusaq to Nasarmijit. In the strait such waves that, while running approximately 30 m.p.h., it was just with some luck, when after several attempts a photo showed the navigation display of the boat, then 2,5 km northern of the CP. The approach to the CP however, was over. Neither the islands of Kitsigsut (in the South) nor the large islands in the North could be seen, or the high mountains of the mainland.

The other day we hiked under the sun from Nasarmijit southward along the coast and finally eastward, experiencing a wonderful landscape and the strong winds from the open sea. Our destination was 6 km away: the south most point of Greenland’s mainland (Picture 7), opposite the mountains belonging to the big island Nunarssuaq. Still, the well known Kap Farvel is situated 45 km to Southeast, i. e. still further southward, but on an island (Eggers Ø).

7 August. We climbed 500 m altitude along the west face of Nasarmijit’s home mountain to catch a glimpse of the Kitsigsut Strait and Archipelago (Picture 1).

8 August was the day of return to Nanortalik and later to Qaqortoq (Julianehåb). Again rather bad visibility, but some Kitsisut islands could be seen in the mist (Picture 3), as well as the lower part of the 840 m-mountain Ersinartup qaqa in the mainland (Picture 4). Some birds were fishing in the sea - puffins, never observed elsewhere in Greenland.
