17-Apr-2010 --

17-Apr-2010 --

We started the hunt for confluence 6°N 75°W in Medellín; my son Juan Sebastián and I drove to Guarne, a town located 20 kilometers to the East and there we picked our friend Álvaro Saldarriaga up, who will join us for this adventure. There in Guarne we completed the preparations. We drove in the Medellín-Bogota highway which is now very well guarded by the army. After 2 hours we arrived to a place called "La Tebaida" and after going on another 500 meters we found a sawmill where we left the car. The confluence was 980 meters away from there. We met some peasants and we explained to them the reason for our travel. I have been there in 2008, trying to do this confluence through a different path in the jungle, I came 450 meters close but I had to return without reaching my objective due to several difficulties; however the wish to return stayed with me.

In the sawmill we convinced Antonio García, a local wood cutter, to help us as a guide, given his knowledge of the zone. We started climbing the mountain following the GPS indications, it took a lot of physical effort because of the steep slope and during the last 200 meters we have to open our way through the dense vegetation with a machete. Finally, after an hour, we reached the point, it is located 1140 m.a.s.l. We proceeded to take the pictures and buried some coins as a token of our visit.

The site is not in very good shape in terms of ecological preservation because of the wood cutting activities that are carried out without any regulation. We started our return using a different path, trying to ease the effort. The weather was very helpful; we had a warm and beautiful day. We took advantage of the trip to visit San Luis, another town where we had lunch and a little rest before we drove back to Medellín. This is my sixth confluence hunting in Colombia and we are already preparing another visit in Antioquia, given that Álvaro, our friend, is very willing to join us again.

Coordinator's Note: DCP encourage all visitors to not leave things that do not belong to the confluence site.
