#1: The Confluence from 20 m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

22-Sep-2020 -- We have hiked for 43 days 1600 km on foot starting in Zurich, Switzerland to reach this confluence point. The start of this hike was in September 2019, when we began our journey to St. Petersburg. But we hiked only one day in 2019. End of February 2020, we really began to add some steps every weekend. We continued hiking across Germany and Poland in stages. At the beginning, we hiked only for the weekend and travelled back home to Zurich by train. When the next opportunity arose, we took a train to the place we had finished last time and resumed our hike from the same train station. A summary of the trip can be found here. We had to skip the Russian enclave Kaliningrad due to the difficulty to enter Russia during 2020. So we continued in the Lithuanian harbour city Klaipeda and reached this confluence point on day #43 on our leg from Žemaitija National Park to Telšiai.

The confluence is located east of the Žemaitija National Park, which has several beautiful lakes. One kilometre south of the confluence point, in the village Kulskiai, we split up and I made a little deviation to reach this confluence point. The confluence is located almost exactly on a little track at the edge of a spruce forest. The weather was perfect for hiking - as it was the whole week: sunny, 20 degrees Celsius.

Unfortunately, the convenient track is a dead end that leads to a wooden house. To avoid tracing back I continued walking into the dead end. After a short off-road hike crossing a meadow and a little forest I reached our official track again about 1 km north of the confluence point. I was even first to reach our designated meeting point. As always: I had wetted my feet in the dewy meadow.
