01-Oct-2011 – We have prepared for rafting down Mana river, and noticed that an unvisited confluence is located not far from the river bed.

The preliminary calculations showed that the desired point lies on the mount situated in about 5 km of rafting from Vyezzhyy-Log setllement ["Log" - is a kind of ravine]. It is the very place where well-known poet and actor Vladimir Vysotsky acted in a feature film «The Master of Taiga» in summer of 1968.

Our packing for travel was long as usual. The crew consisted of 3 boats, but only three of us felt ready for climbing up to reach some virtual confluence. Therefore long packing was good for us. The goal was to set the camp for overnight stay as close to the confluence as possible. Having rafted down Mana till the nearest place from which it is possible to trail and reach the CP, we saw appropriate place for encampment, and we moored there after some coaxing. Frankly speaking not all of us could moor with the first attempt, but like barge haulers we dragged especially dilatory boaters. It turned out that there was a railway in 20 meters away from the camp. The experienced friends said that a train passed only twice a night. As it turned out later on, neither twice but all 22 times goods trains rushed somewhere overhead. We slept as if on rail tracks.

On the next morning we woke up in the icy tent. It was about –5°C in the night and moisture had frozen on its surface. We chipped the ice off, ate fast, packed our things and rowed across Mana. On the opposite bank of the river we fastened our boat and set off hiking up the hill. The hill was rather high and arduous, so we ascended by zigzag way, time by time we had a rest and made pictures. In an hour we reached the peak where a fairly beautiful view has open from. There was scenic view either to mountains or Mana river. It seemed as if we were higher than all the surrounding mountains. While climbing up we were thinking that we had came up at least 500 meters high, but having looked on GPS we were disappointed since there was only 363 meters. From the top we started to forge ahead through dense birch underwood, which grew for the last several years, it was gently sloping descent. Sometimes we came across the the burnt parts of wood and met bizarre stubs.

We've got two GPS units, GPSmap60-CSx and GPSmap62, therefore having reached the location of confluence, each of us could find his personal confluence and make a shot with it. The first confluence was found at 10:15 am, its elevation (above the sea level) is about 888 m. While looking for the cherished zeros we managed to trample a bandbox about 6 meters wide, but each of us had his own all-zero point! No sightseeing attractions nor any other remarkable things were discovered at the location of our confluence, only several burnt stubs and absolutely monotonous dense birch forest.

We completed a photo session against the confluence background. Then it took us less than an hour to go down to our boat. We prepared a dinner, boarded and pulled a good oars in order to catch up with the others. Further on we had a great rafting, met stone “rakes”, took forced bathing and finally returned home.

We shall try to visit 55°N 92°W next year, I have been there about 10 years ago. Currently I shall try to find and discover it again.
